“My life without Money” Book Review
Heidemarie Schwermer, a 63-year old German woman, has lived without money
for the last ten years, and has written a book about her experiences called My Life
without Money.
At the age of 54, Heidemarie gave up her job as a psychotherapist, gave away all
her money and her flat and threw away her credit cards. She did not have regular salary
anymore. Today, apart from a few clothes (three sweaters, two skirts, two pairs of
shoes, and a coat) and a few personal belongings, she does not have anything. Before
the experience of her, she did not have any savings – a big or small amount of money
that a person keeps for a while.
It all began as a one-year experiment. In her home city of Dortmund, she set up a
‘swapping circle’ where people swap services without using money, for example a
haircut for a mathematic class. She decided to try this lifestyle and give up using money
for a year. When the year ended, she continued and has not used money since then.
Before she started this lifestyle, she was not in debt, that is, she did not ask for any
money from bank or somebody else. She stayed in her friends’ house and she fed their
animals and watered their plants in return.
At the moment she is staying in a student residence where she can sleep, have a
shower, or use a computer in return for cooking for the young people who live there.
Heidemarie says,” When I need a bus ticket, for example, I think – Who can I ask? What
can I give to them in return? If I want to go to cinema, I might suggest them to look after
for the afternoon or night”. According to her, one of the mistakes in our society is that
most people spend money unnecessarily. They should decrease their spending on
things they do not need. It is better to spend on these things less. She also said that
many people judge us with our money and salary. Our budget, how much we earn and
spend should be private for us. Today most people use credit cards and have problems
with their interest rate. What is important is to earn and spend according to our
standards. In her opinion too, all jobs are equally important. You may not earn a lot of
money but you may be worth a lot as a person. Those are all her messages.

The Subway

In the summer of 1965, 17-year-old Fred DeLuca was trying to figure out how to
pay for medical school. A family friend suggested that Fred open a sandwich shop and
then the friend invested $1,000 to help it get started. Within a month, they opened their
first sandwich shop. From that humble start, the Subway franchise chain grew with
approximately 45,000 stores in more than 100 countries.

For more than 10 years, Subway advertisements feature Jared Fogle, a college
student who was overweight but lost 245 pounds (about 111 kg) by only eating
Subway's low-fat sandwiches. Jared says it was a fluke that he ended up in Subway's
ads. Fogle first came to Media attention in April 1999, via an article written by a former
dormmate about Fogle’s weight loss and published in Indiana Daily Student. According
to the article, Fogle had become obese through lack of exercise and eating junk food.
Switching to eating at Subway, he changed his eating habits there to include healthier
choices and smaller portions free of fattening condiments such as mayonnaise, which
was followed by his significant weight loss. Jared already knew he like Subway
sandwiches, but the ‘7 under 6’ promotion inspired him to incorporate them into his diet.
As soon as Jared’s ads began to run, word of his inspiring story spread and consumer
awareness of subway and its healthy fare increased.

Subway's strategy at that time focused on its line of seven different sandwiches
with under six grams of fat. The goal was to set Subway food apart from other fast food,
position it to appeal to health-conscious eaters and spark new sales growth. Rapidly,
sales grew more than 18 percent that year. The ads also attracted attention from
potential franchises which saw in Subway a profitable small business opportunity.
Subway tried to balance its menu and promotion to appeal to three segments:
customers interested in low fat, those most concerned about taste, as well as those
seeking a good value.
