Mitigating the Risks of Artificial Intelligence (AI):

Safeguarding Academia and Employment through

Information Literacy and Advocacy

Summary

The science of creating machines with human-life though processes is

known as artificial intelligence. Unlike humans, artificial intelligence (AI)

technology can handle vast volumes of data. According to Artificial

Intelligence Statistics, as of 2021, about 4.2 billion devices possess AI-

powered assistants. By 2024, this number is expected to double with 8.4

billion devices.

This branch of computer science has become the fastest-growing

industry globally, as humans are becoming more dependent on AIs on a

daily basis. Artificial intelligence possesses underlying threats such as

malicious use, conflicts involving cyberwarfare, and organizational risks.

Moreover, AI poses the threat of job displacement, privacy leakage, the

spread of false information, and the possibility of AI going rogue and taking

over systems.

With this issue, the researchers propose a solution that aims to

promote information literacy, utilization of websites that monitors AI

involvement and advocating for human jobs protection. (ADD)

Background and Problem

(First paragraph)

The rise of human intelligence simulation processes has been around

for the last eight decades. Artificial Intelligence, published by Alan Turing in

year 1950, marks the birth of AI associated with his work “Computer

Machinery and Intelligence”. In the present, AIs have been evidently

dominating the global economy. According to a survey, 35% of companies

have adopted AI. Artificial Intelligence is also present in 77% of gadgets that

are in use. For a competitive edge, AI is supported by 9 out of 10

enterprises. By 2030, it is expected to boost the world economy by 15.7

trillion, (Webster M., 2024).

During the surge of COVID-19 pandemic, artificial intelligence has

been on a rise as it was introduced to make jobs flexible. Chatbots, digital

assistants, facial recognition – these are just few of the examples of artificial

intelligence. AIs can cover a wide range of sectors; education, economy, and

cybersecurity. Artificial Intelligence may have been a help to the society, but

it poses an undeniable significant threat.

According to an article, catastrophic AI risks can be observed through

the following categories; malicious use, AI race, organizational risks, and

rogue AIs (Center for AI Safety, 2024). Moreover, artificial intelligence can

also pose a threat to job displacement, privacy leakage, spread of false

information, and going rogue, taking over systems. According to statistics,

14% of workers have already experienced job displacement due to

automation or AI. On the other hand, 92% of institutions are already using

AI technology regularly (University of the People, 2024).

With this issue, the researchers propose a solution that aims to

mitigate the risks of AI with objectives to safeguard institutions and

employment. Through a solution focusing on the promotion information

literacy, utilization of websites that monitors AI involvement and advocating

for human jobs protection.

Beneficiaries

This solution that involves promoting information literacy, utilizing

websites that monitors AI involvement and advocating human jobs

protections shall benefit the following sectors, namely;

Government. The Philippine Government can benefit from this study

through the strengthening of cybersecurity in reduction of Artificial

Intelligence threats. This study can also benefit the government through a

campaign that promotes information literacy, human jobs protection and

the utilization of websites in regards to AI involvement, this approach can

further improve the lives of the Filipinos.

Department of Information and Communications Technology

(DICT). This study shall benefit this sector through the National Computer

Emergency Response Team (NCERT), a division under the Cybersecurity

Bureau. By proposing the said solution, this department under the Republic

of the Philippines can alleviate threats posed by artificial intelligence.

Department of Education (DepEd). This department which is

responsible for the development of students’ learning and capacity shall

benefit from this study through the enhancement of authentic, cyberthreat-

free education for both students and educators.

Local Communities. The local communities can benefit from this

study as this addresses the escalating risks of artificial intelligence that can

affect the community in terms of livelihood, education, and governance.

Students. The study shall benefit the learners through promotion of

information literacy, an essential tool in understanding motives of artificial

intelligence.
Proposed Solution

The use of AI has recently become a trend. Its potential was seen by

the world, and the huge development that it may bring. But aside from that,

it has also raised concerns, especially in the academic field where AI could

be misused by students to cheat. According to an article by Center for AI

Safety (Year), AI poses the threat of job displacement, privacy leakage, the

spread of false information, and the possibility of AI going rogue and taking

over systems.

Promoting Information Literacy through infographics, utilizing

websites that checks AI involvement, and advocating for the protection of

human jobs from AI can be solutions that may help combat the multiple

threats of AI.

Promoting information literacy could help the general public be aware

of the dangers of AI, and would help them be more skeptical of social media

posts. AI can be used to fool the public; it can be used to engineer harmful

propaganda or fake media that may cause massive confusion. Information

literacy is one of the most effective and feasible way of combating fake news

(Batchelor, 2017). Using infographics would be a good to promote

information literacy and make people much more aware of its benefits. A

direct quote from the article "Infographics: Visual communication" states

that "Infographics are about efficient and appealing communication. While

some ideas are more efficiently communicated as text, others are better

communicated as visuals. Visual communication plays an important role in

simplifying complex ideas, showing patterns in data and keeping the viewer
engaged." Therefore, infographics are an effective way of disseminating

information to the public about information literacy.

Utilizing websites that checks AI involvement can be a helpful tool to

combat another form of AI misuse, which is cheating. It is sometimes hard

to tell the difference between something that is written by a human and an

AI. If we utilize websites similar to these on schools, the number of students

that uses AI to cheat would decrease.

Advocating for the protection of human jobs. As AI develops, the

possibility of it taking over human jobs is not far-fetched. By the early

2030's, 30% of human jobs could be automated according to a study by

PwC(Year published). Therefore, it is very essential for the general public to

advocate the protection of human jobs, because we may lose our jobs in the

future if we maintain being indifferent.

Methods

The following methods would be used to prepare and create the

necessary tools and actions in order for the proposed solution to be realized

and to combat the risk of AI.

A. Promoting Information Literacy through Infographics. In order to

realize this solution, the following steps would be conducted by the

researchers:

•Researching ways of improving information literacy in order to create an

appropriate infographic that would be disseminated to the public. This is

done so that the information provided would be accurate and factual. This

would be the very foundation of the first proposed solution.

•Translating the information in order to suit the demographic. In order for

people to truly understand the infographic, they must also understand the

language. Therefore, using their mother tongue, would help them ingest the

information and apply it.

•Converting the translated information into the infographic. Focusing on the

information rather than on the visuals.

•Disseminating the infographic. The infographic can then be disseminated

either through social media or fliers.

B. Utilizing websites that Check AI Involvement. This would be useful in

the school environment. For the sake of uniformity, GPTZero would be a

good tool. This tool will check someone's output, and tell if it's made by an

AI or not.
•Suggesting this tool to a teacher. The utilization can start at a classroom

setting, and its effectiveness would be tested on a real and practical

application.

•More teachers would then use this website until the whole school have

utilized this system. Making AI outputs come to light.

C. Advocating for the Protection of Human Jobs from Automation. This

is important in order for people to become much more aware of the ongoing

threat, and therefore more people would advocate for the protection of

workers. If more people advocate, then it's more likely to be noticed by the

congress, and they might propose a bill protecting human jobs from

automation.
