Assignment#2 Solution

The document provides solutions to two engineering problems involving thermodynamic cycles. The first problem involves determining the thermal efficiency of a steam power plant operating under three conditions. The second problem involves determining properties of an ideal Brayton cycle with air as the working fluid and a pressure ratio of 10.

Assignment # 2 Solution

1. As the Lead Engineer for ARAMCO, you have been presented with multiple options for the
operating conditions of an upcoming sub-critical steam power plant in Jeddah. Assume that the
steam power plant is modeled using the Ideal Rankine cycle. Determine the thermal efficiency
of the power plant for the following three operating conditions:

(a) The steam enters the turbine at 3 MPa and 350 °C and is condensed in the condenser at a
pressure of 10 kPa. (15 marks)
(b) The steam enters the turbine at 3 MPa and 600 °C and is condensed in the condenser at a
pressure of 10 kPa. (15 marks)
(c) The steam enters the turbine at higher boiler pressure of 15 MPa and inlet temperature of
600 °C and is condensed in the condenser at a pressure of 10 kPa. (15 marks)

Draw T-s diagrams for the cycle for each operating condition and provide a table listing the
properties (T, p, s, and h) at the four states. (15 marks)

Identify the operating conditions, which maximize the thermal efficiency of the steam power plant
and discuss the effect of increasing pressure and temperature on the efficiency of the power plant.
(10 marks)

Solution:
2. As the Thermal Engineer for Saline Water Conversion Corporation, you are tasked with
designing an upcoming gas power plant in Jubail. You can start by a simple ideal Brayton cycle
with air as the working fluid. Consider a pressure ratio of 10. The air enters the compressor at
290 K and the turbine at 1100 K. As an initial analysis, consider constant specifics. Determine:

i. Draw a T-s diagram for the cycle showing all states

ii. The air temperature at the compressor exit
iii. The back work ratio
iv. The daily energy output of the gas power plant considering that it operates for 24 hours
each day and the gas flow rate is 100 kg/s.
v. Assuming that each house consumes 100 kWh per day, calculate the number of houses
that can be powered by the above gas power plant.
vi. The thermal efficiency.
vii. The maximum theoretical efficiency
viii. How can you improve the efficiency if this power plant?
