The document discusses the Poisson distribution and its applications. The Poisson distribution models the probability of events occurring in a fixed interval when the average rate is known. It is characterized by the parameter lambda, which represents the average number of events. Some examples of its real-life applications include modeling customer arrivals at a restaurant.

PROJECT
POISSON DISTRBUTION
Abstract:-
In a restaurant, the arrival of
customers often follows a Poisson
distribution, where the number of
arrivals in a fixed period is
proportional to the length of the
period. This mathematical model helps
restaurants predict peak hours and
manage staffing levels efficiently. Just
as the Poisson distribution provides a
framework for understanding customer
arrivals, it also underscores the
importance of statistical tools in
optimizing restaurant operations.

INTRODUCTION :-

The History of the Poisson Distribution In

1830, French mathematician SiméonDenis
Poisson developed the distribution to
indicate the low to high spread of the
probable number of times that a gambler
would win at a gambling game – such as
baccarat – within a large number of times
that the game was played.
METHODOLOGY & WORKING
PRINICIPLE:-
The Poisson distribution is a discrete probability
distribution that expresses the probability of a
given number of events occurring in a fixed
interval of time or space. Here are some
characteristics of the Poisson distribution.
1. Definition: The Poisson distribution is
defined by a single parameter, λ (lambda),
which represents the average number of
events in the given interval.
2. Probability Mass Function (PMF): The
probability mass function of the Poisson
distribution is given by
P(X=k) = (e^(-λ) * λ^k) / k!,
where X is the random variable
representing the number of events, k is the
number of events, and e is the base of the
natural logarithm.
3. Mean and Variance: The mean (μ) and
variance (σ2) of the Poisson distribution
are both equal to λ.
4. Shape: The Poisson distribution is skewed
to the right, with the degree of skewness
decreasing as λ increases.
5. Applicability: The Poisson distribution is
often used to model the number of events
occurring in a fixed interval of time or
space when the events are rare and
independent, and the average rate of
occurrence is constant.
6. Conditions: The events must occur one at
a time, the probability of an event
occurring in a small interval is
proportional to the size of the interval, and
the events must be independent of each
other.
7. . Approximation to Binomial: The Poisson
distribution can be used as an
approximation to the binomial distribution
under certain conditions, such as a large
number of trials (n) and a small probability
of success (p), where λ = n * p.
REAL LIFE APPLICATION :-
Number of arrivals at a restaurant.
Restaurants use the Poisson distribution to
model the number of expected customers
that will arrive at the restaurant per day.
For example, suppose a given
restaurant receives an average of 100
customers per day. We can use the Poisson
distribution calculator to find the
probability that the restaurant receives
more than a certain number of customers.
P(X > 110 customers) = 0.14714
P(X > 120 customers) = 0.02267
P(X > 130 customers) = 0.00171
RESULT & ANALYSIS:-
If X has Poisson distribution with 𝝀 = 𝟓
find,
1. P(x=3)
2. P(x≤ 𝟏)

⇒ 𝒊) 𝒑(𝒙 = 𝟑)
ⅇ̅𝟓. 𝟓 𝟑

= 0.0067x125/3x2x1
= 0.139

ii) p[x≤ 𝟏]
=p[x=0]+p[x=1]

ⅇ−𝝀 𝝀𝒙
P(x)=
𝒙!
=ⅇ_𝟓 .5/0! + ⅇ_𝟓 .𝟓𝟏 /1!
=0.0067x1/1 + 0.0067x5/1
CONCLUSION:-

The Poisson distribution is a

probability distribution that describes
the number of events occurring in a
fixed interval of time or space, given
the average rate of occurrence. It is
characterized by the parameter λ
(lambda), which represents the average
number of events in the given interval.
Some key points about the Poisson
distribution include.
1. It is used to model rare events
where the average rate of
occurrence is known.
2. It assumes that events occur
independently and at a constant
average rate
3. . The probability of observing a
specific number of events can be
calculated using the Poisson
probability mass function.
