Assignment 3

This document outlines three questions regarding digital communication systems. Question 1 involves 4-ary PAM transmission over an AWGN channel and calculates the bit rate, symbol rate, frequency range, and BER. Question 2 involves binary signaling over an AWGN channel and sketches an optimal receiver structure, calculates BER values, and determines an optimal value of c. Question 3 involves BPSK, BASK, and QPSK transmission over an AWGN channel and calculates bit rates, BER values, and additional power required for QPSK.

EE3008 Assignment 3

(Due Date: 5 pm, Nov. 26, 2023)

Question 1 (31 marks)

An analog source signal with bandwidth 20 kHz is sampled at the Nyquist rate, quantized into 2048
levels, and transmitted by using 4-ary PAM over an AWGN channel with 90% in-band power. At the
receiver, the received signal power and the two-sided noise power spectral density are measured to be
19.8 W and 10-6W/Hz, respectively. The optimal detector is adopted.
1. Determine the bit rate and the symbol rate. (6 marks)
2. Determine the frequency range of the AWGN channel. (5 marks)
3. Determine the BER and SER. (10 marks)
4. Suppose that Binary OOK is adopted to transmit the bit stream with the same power. Determine the
required channel bandwidth with 90% in-band power for reducing the BER to 1% of the 4-ary PAM
case. (10 marks)

Question 2 (36 marks)

A binary signaling system uses digital waveforms s1 (t ) and s2 (t ) to represent bits “1” and “0”,

 A, 0  t   / 2
respectively, where s1 (t ) =  and 𝑠2 (𝑡) = 𝑐 ⋅ 𝐴, 0 ≤ 𝑡 < 𝜏. The system operates on an
 0,  / 2  t  
AWGN channel, and the optimal receiver is adopted. The BER with c=0 is found to be 10-3.
1. Sketch and label the optimal receiver structure for 𝑐 = 1/2. (10 marks)
2. Determine the BER when 𝑐 = −1/2. (10 marks)
3. Suppose that −1 ≤ 𝑐 ≤ 1. What is the optimal value of c to minimize the BER? (8 marks)

4. Suppose that c=1. If we use s1' (t ) = s1 (t ) cos(2 f ct ) and s2' (t ) = s2 (t ) sin(2 f c t ) to represent bits

“1” and “0”, respectively, where the carrier frequency fc is an integer multiple of 1/, what is the
optimal BER? (8 marks)

Question 3 (33 marks)

Consider a BPSK system operating on an AWGN channel of frequency range [99 MHz, 101 MHz] with
95% in-band power. Suppose that a coherent demodulator is adopted at the receiver and the BER is
measured to be 10-4.
1. Determine the bit rate. (4 marks)
2. If BASK is now used to transmit the bit stream with the same power over the same channel with
95% in-band power. Determine the BER. (10 marks)
3. If QPSK is now used to transmit the bit stream with the same power over the same channel with
95% in-band power.
1) Determine the bit rate and the symbol rate. (4 marks)
2) Determine the BER and SER. (9 marks)
3) Determine how many additional dBs of transmission power are required to achieve the same
BER as the BPSK case. (6 marks)
