Generation Transition
Aeron James B. Mendoza

Time reveals consistent changes and no one in the universe can stop it. As
time continuously runs, generation takes its transition too. It includes how people
live and interact during their generations considering the factors that affect their
personalities. Millennials and Generation Z are under generation’s transition that
the world has.

3
A latest study from Pew Research Center on Millennials and Generation Z
clarified the differences between the two. People who were born since 1981 from
1996 are considered as millennials. Almost all of them are enjoying watching
television. These are the people who underwent technological explosion of internet
and social media. It caused familiarity to the context of things found in online
platforms. They are also called as Generation Y.
Most of the millennials nowadays are having their own family. If millennials
are familiar with technology, therefore, their children too who might be considered
as part of Generation Z. Due to explosion of internet and social media in millennials
who might be their parents, Generation Z becomes more interested because this
explosion continues to grow. Many complex things in internet are crossed by
Generation Z but they can still manage and adapt it. They can be digital natives.
These are the people who are born since 1996 or 1997 up until 2012 or 2015.
Because their parents are millennials, they are having more time playing with their
parents’ gadgets. They are also given gadgets even they are young in different
purposes. Communication becomes easy especially when they are far from one
another.
Based on some philosophers, they are named after letter because Generation
X was discovered with no particular name. As a result, the generation that had
followed this, used the letters after X in our alphabet. Generation Y is called
Millennials not because they are millennium but they are more exposed to internet
and social media which brought significance from the previous generations. On the
other hand, Generation Z is also defined as iGeneration which are the first
generation to grow in an environment with high technology.
Millennials are the next leaders which will contribute remarkable impact to
the progress and development of the society. Generation Y and Z are not
synonymous but they are interconnected because it is consecutive phases of the
generation. There are changes that make them distinct from one another. These
generations are both exposed to technology but the difference is how early they are
exposed and how early they own a gadget.
Moreover, despite of differences in terms of our generation, there are things
that should never fade or forgotten. These are respect, love, and acceptance. These
are really essential. People could live without technology before but they cannot live
without love. People can live happily because of trendy and updated gadgets but we
cannot be truly happy without acceptance. People can live freely without posting on
social media but we cannot live freely without respecting one another. Social media,
technology, and internet should not be the things that will separate our closeness
and unity.
Desires and wants of people are insatiable which lead to always growing and
changing ways of living. There will always be no exact satisfaction. Worldly things
belie the sincerity and authenticity of happiness and love. These give
misinterpretation of true meaning of life. Study said that millennials really suffered
from different agonizing experiences especially in financial terms that led to
iGeneration to secure fund and savings because they witnessed their hardships.
These experiences really awaken their hearts to learn more from what social media
can give.

4
In conclusion, there are no exception in terms of generation because at the
end of the day it is not how many likes you have received but how many people you
helped sincerely and how many hearts you inspired. Time is fleeting, it is like vehicle
that passed by in front of us. People better maximize all the opportunities to become
productive and effective part of the society. No one can retrocede to the past nor
fare to the future. People can control what is happening in the present in order to
recover from the past and to prepare for the future.
No matter you are millennials, iGeneration, or any generation you belong,
people should never deprive others nor ourselves with the love that we deserve or
else there will be feeling of being incomplete. Let us make all chances especially
online platforms to be our voices to influence and motivate one another. That event
will be one of the most appealing in the eyes of our God that even generation changes,
His love remains.

Processing Questions:

1. What is Generation Z?
2. What are the differences between millennials and Generation Z?
3. What do you notice about the highlighted words used by the author?
4. How did the author define those words?
5. What strategy did the author use to define those words?

What is It

As our readings imply, the definition can begin with a synonym, a brief phrase, or a
formal sentence that describes the term/field in its most basic form.

An important writing tool you'll need is to know about extended definition.

Extended Definition defines and explains a single term, concept, or object

down the meaning of a specific word, or defines an abstract concept goes deeper than a
simple dictionary definition.

An extended definition is one or more paragraphs that attempt/s to explain a

complex term.

Writing Formal Sentence Definition

One of the first things to do when you write an extended definition is to compose the
formal sentence definition of the term you are writing about. Place it toward the beginning of
the extended definition. It establishes the focus for the rest of the discussion. It is "formal"
because it uses a certain form. Here are several examples:

5
Note:
TERMS DEFINED – (Boldface)
CLASSES TO WHICH THE TERM BELONG – (Underlined)
CHARACTERISTICS: Details about the term that distinguishes it from other members of the
class – (Italicized)

1. An Algorithm is a finite description of a finite number of steps required to accomplish some

well-defined task.

2. Carbohydrates are a food group including sugars, starches, and cellulose.

3. Computer memory is one of three basic components of a computer which stores

information for future use – both the data that will be operated on as well as the programs that
direct the operations to be performed.

4. Reservoir rock is a type of rock that has sufficient porosity and permeability to allow gas
and oil to accumulate and be produced in commercial quantities.

5. Influenza is an acute highly contagious infection of the respiratory tract, which occurs
sporadically or in epidemics and that lasts up to month.

In giving expanded definition, it is essential that the sources of the definition are
credible. Therefore, here are some guides in choosing the sources of definition.

Choosing the Sources of the Definition

The key to writing a good extended definition is to choose the sources of definition to
help readers understand the term being defined. Use this checklist to select the kinds of
discussion to include in your extended definitions:

Sources of Extended Definition

Description Does anything related to the term being
defined need to be described?
Example: Millennials are mostly watching
television and exposed in using different
social media application.
Process narration Is there some process (natural, social)
associated with the term that should be
discussed?
Example: Generation Transition takes
place after different considerations and
factors. First, after a big movement in society
such as technological explosion which
paved way for different generations.
Additional definitions Do unfamiliar terms occurring in the
definition also need definition?

6
Example: Generation Transition is also
defined as the changes happening in
lifestyle and social interaction which lead to
have significant differences.
Historical background Is there some history, some key individuals
related to the term being defined? Would
that discussion contribute to the definition of
the term?
Example: Generation Y was evolved during
1996 or 1997 which was named as
“iGeneration” or Generation Z by different
philosophers because of their distinct
peculiarity in using social media and
technology.
Cause, causes Does the reader need to know about causes
related to the term being defined?
Example: Due to transition of generations,
research proved that millennials were really
affected because of the problems happened
in the society which affected how they raised
children.
Effects, results, consequences Does the reader need to know about the
effects related to the term being defined?
Example: As a result, Generation Z
becomes more sensitive with their savings
and future matters.
Problems, solutions Does the term being defined represent a
problem or a solution?
Example: Generation Transition really
affects even the environment that some
areas are sacrificed for developments.
However, it can be a way to fix the gap by
starting a new generation which cares for
nature.
Statistics Should you discuss numerical data related to
the term defined – percentages, amounts,
etc.?
Example: According to the research, there
are two billions of Generation Z in the world.
Uses, applications Would it help to discuss uses or applications
related to the term?
Example: Generation Z is also used to
determine different significant evolvement of
human intelligence and way of interaction.
Similarities, differences, analogies Is the term similar to or different from
something else? Would an analogy help
define the term?

7
Example: If Millennials are called as
Generation Y, iGeneration is called as
Generation Z but they are both exposed in
internet and social media.
Classes, types, categories Are there categories that the term can be
divided into? Does it belong to a certain
category?
Example: Generation Transition includes
all different generations and some of these
are Generation X, Millennials, and
iGeneration.
Examples Would examples contribute to the definition
of the term?
Example: Generation Z people can be the
young Tiktok users, young vloggers, and
young social media influencers.
Word origins Should future development related to the
term be discussed? Does it have
implications – good, bad, or both?
Example: The letter “i” in iGeneration
means individualized because they are
independent which they use it in different
manners.
Negatives Would explaining what the term is not, what
it does not refer to help?
Example: The terms Generation Y and
Generation Z are not really related in their
generations because they just followed the
name Generation X.
Advantages, disadvantages Are there advantages and disadvantages
related to the term that can be discussed?
Example: Generation Transition really
improves technology which gives ease to
people, However, some values fade out.

Adding Short Definitions

As mentioned earlier, you'll find that in writing an extended definition, you must define
other terms as well. Typically, short definitions—a sentence, clause, or phrase in length—will
suffice. Notice how many are added to the "after" version in the following.
Before translation

Measles is an acute, highly infectious disease, with cough, fever, and maculopapular
rash. It has worldwide endemicity. The infective particle is an RNA virus about 100-150 nm
in diameter, measured by ultrafiltration, but the active core is only about 65 nm as measured
by inactivation after electron irradiation. Negative staining in the electron microscope shows
the virus have the helical structure of a paramyxovirus with the helix being 18nm in a
diameter.
8
Measles virus will infect monkeys easily and chick embryos with difficulty. In tissue
cultures, the virus may produce giant multinudeated cells and nuclear acidophilic inclusion
bodies. The virus has not been shown to have the receptor-destroying enzyme associated
with other paramyxoviruses. measles, canine distemper, and bovine rinderspest viruses are
antigenetically related.

After translation

Measles is an acute, highly infectious disease caused by a virus. The illness is

characterized by a cough, fever, and maculopapular (raised red) rash. It has worldwide
endemicity – that is, people throughout the world are vulnerable to the disease. The infective
particle (organism causing the disease) is a virus about 100-150 nm (a nanometer being 10
meter) in diameter and contains RNA (ribonucleic acid) as it genetic material rather than DNA
(deoxyribonucleic acid). The size of the measles virus as measured by ultrafiltation, in which
filters with extremely small pore are used. The active core, or actual genetic material (RNA),
is only 85 nm, as measured by electron irradiation on which inactivates the core. Negative
staining, a shadowing technique used with an electron microscope, shows the virus to have
a specific helical structure common to a group of viruses known as paramyxoviruses. The
helix, a spiral around a core (similar to a winding staircase) is 18nm in diameter.
Measles virus will infect monkeys easily and chick embryos with difficulty. In tissue
cultures (those involving living cells or tissue from other living organisms), the measles virus
may produce giant cells containing many nuclei and acidophilic inclusion bodies (red-
stained areas in the nucleus which are a laboratory sign for certain viral infections). The virus
has not been shown to have the receptor-destroying enzyme, a protein capable of destroying
or inactivating a cell-surface molecule, usually associated with other viruses in the
paramyxovirus group. Measles, canine distemper (a flu-like disease affecting dogs), and
bovine rinderpest (a virus affecting cows) are antigenetically related – that is, they possess
similar antigens (molecules that stimulate production of an antibody on their surfaces).

The words in boldface are the terms defined. The underlined words are the classes to
which the terms belong and the words italicized are the characteristics. It is important to know
and include the following information in giving expanded definition of words.

Furthermore, there are effective techniques that will make a text successful in using
expanded definitions.

The techniques you use will depend on what is appropriate for the audience and
subject matter.

These techniques are listed below:

1. Etymology – explaining the origin of the word itself.

2. History – if relevant, discussing the history of the term/its use/controversies associated
with it.
3. Cause and Effect – discussing how the topic came about and what effects it may have
4. Description – listing and defining the component parts
5. Principles of Operation – discussing how topic in question functions, including any special
materials or conditions required
6. Classification - showing how the topic fits into a larger category
7. Contrast/Negation – showing how the topic differs from others in the same class
8. Comparison – showing how the topic is similar to others in the class

9
9. Analogy – explaining by comparing two dissimilar topics, where the second is familiar to
the audience
10. Examples- a thing characteristic of its kind or illustrating a general rule
11. Illustrations- an example serving to clarify or prove something

What’s More

Independent Activity 1: Discover the Unknown!

Directions: Read and analyze the given text. Then, categorize the words in the box by putting
in the column where it is connected. Write your answers on a separate sheet of
paper.

In social media, we can make ourselves productive to learn more. We are having more
time for browsing and posting in different social media but it can be a way to learn more about
present issue and situation. Language is really growing, still, people can go with the flow of
its development. There are many words that are now added to our vocabulary. Freegan is a
word from “free” and “vegan”, vegan is very strict of what to be eaten. However, because of
the word “free”, it becomes a person who only eats free food which was thrown away. It is a
fact that we have many wasted food, at the same time, unemployment. As a result, there are
freegans. Next word is plastic footprint which is relevant to environmental protection. From
the concept of footprint, these are marks of where you are from. Combining the idea of plastic
and footprint, these are the plastic that someone has consumed like plastic cups, bottles,
straws, and other things made from not natural materials. On the other hand, it can be stopped
by using materials that we can reuse and recycle. Let us make environmental actions buzzy.
It is like watching movie, riding a bike, traveling a place, and visiting beach that give thrill to
our life. Let us make a change, and we can start it on social media. Social media is not to
zone out people, but to make us responsible. Let us be true and sincere social media
influencer. Save the Earth, save ourselves.
