New York 1973
Having escaped to London from war torn Germany as a young boy, George passed a certain tube station
with a fairy-tale name on his way to medical college each day, and fell in love with that name.
Elephant & Castle Prince Street opened in The Village NY in ’73 across from St Vincent’s Hospital where
George had worked as an oncologist since the 1950’s. After two decades of short lunch-breaks where he
could never get anything he wanted to eat, finally he retired to a life of eating everything he wanted to eat,
in his own restaurant with a special name. His passion and obsession for quality was infectious and E&C
became a New York classic within a few years. The popularity of the original E&C encouraged George to
open several other hugely successful New York restaurants, notably Keens Steakhouse in Upper Midtown,
which to this day, consistently ranks in The NY Times top 5 places to eat in the City.
Dublin 1989
On one of his many visits back to Europe, George made a random but inspirational visit to Ireland and
found himself in an area in Dublin that reminded him of the location of the first E&C in Manhattan. Here
he was in late 80’s desolate Temple Bar with it’s cobbled back streets, empty pubs and warehouses and no
traffic. Perfect! Our doors opened in January 1989 and by Summer of that year the queues had already
started for our fantastic food and spectacular atmosphere! Outside the world has greatly changed, but
inside our swinging doors we try to keep things just the way they are.
Over 30 years on and Elephant & Castle restaurant has amassed a legion of loyal fans who flock from all
corners to get their hands the classic New York style menu. Home to Ireland's original and best chicken
wings! We continue to promise tasty food that never compromised on quality. Serving up world-famous
wings, fresh salads, gourmet burgers as well as classic weekend brunch - there's something for everyone.
Known as one of Ireland's top family-friendly restaurants, across Dublin and Galway, Elephant & Castle
is the perfect destination for the whole herd.
