Quiz #2 Solution – Properties of Fluids

1. Surface Tension
2. Force acting per unit length.

Definition of Surface Tension

- It is the tension of the surface film of a liquid caused by the attraction of the
particles in the surface layer by the bulk of the liquid which trends to minimize
surface area.
- It is a property of a liquid surface displayed by its acting as if it were a stretched
elastic membrane.
- Surface tension could be defined as the property of the surface of a liquid that
allows it to resist an external force due to the cohesive nature of its molecules.
- Surface tension is measured as the energy required to increase area of a liquid by
a unit of area.
- The surface tension of liquid results from an imbalance of intermolecular
attractive forces, the cohesive force between molecules.
