Introduction
Sensory deficits can significantly impact an individual's quality of life and daily functioning. In this
scenario, I have been diagnosed with a specific sensory deficit. I will discuss the deficit, its causes,
available help and support, and how it might affect my life. Throughout the response, I will provide APA
in-text citations to support the information presented.

Sensory Deficit: Hearing Loss

For this scenario, I have been diagnosed with hearing loss. Hearing loss is a common sensory deficit that
can occur due to various factors, such as age, exposure to loud noises, certain medications, and
underlying health conditions (National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders
[NIDCD], 2021). In my case, the hearing loss is likely due to a combination of genetic factors and
prolonged exposure to loud music during my younger years (NIDCD, 2021).

Causes and Risk Factors

Genetic factors play a significant role in the development of hearing loss. Studies have shown that certain
genetic mutations can lead to congenital hearing loss or increase the risk of developing hearing loss later
in life (Shearer et al., 2017). Additionally, exposure to loud noises, such as those from music concerts,
machinery, or firearms, can cause noise-induced hearing loss (NIDCD, 2021). In my case, the prolonged
exposure to loud music during my younger years has likely contributed to the development of my hearing
loss.

Available Help and Support

There are various resources and support systems available for individuals with hearing loss. Hearing aids
and cochlear implants are common assistive devices that can help improve hearing and communication
(NIDCD, 2021). Additionally, speech therapy and lip-reading classes can help individuals adapt to their
hearing loss and improve their communication skills (NIDCD, 2021). Local support groups and
organizations, such as the Hearing Loss Association of America (HLAA), provide resources, advocacy,
and a sense of community for individuals with hearing loss (HLAA, 2022). In terms of workplace
support, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requires employers to provide reasonable
accommodations for individuals with disabilities, including hearing loss (U.S. Equal Employment
Opportunity Commission, 2022). Accommodations may include providing assistive listening devices,
offering written materials, or allowing for flexible work arrangements to accommodate the individual's
needs.
Impact on Life
Hearing loss can significantly impact various aspects of an individual's life, including social interactions,
work performance, and overall quality of life. Difficulty communicating with friends and family can lead
to social isolation and feelings of frustration (NIDCD, 2021). In the workplace, hearing loss can make it
challenging to participate in meetings, communicate with colleagues, and perform job-related tasks
(NIDCD, 2021). Additionally, hearing loss can impact an individual's safety, as it may be difficult to hear
warning signals or alarms (NIDCD, 2021).

Conclusion
In this scenario, I have been diagnosed with hearing loss, a common sensory deficit that can significantly
impact an individual's life. The hearing loss is likely due to a combination of genetic factors and
prolonged exposure to loud music during my younger years. However, there are various resources and
support systems available to help individuals with hearing loss adapt and improve their quality of life. By
utilizing assistive devices, seeking support from local organizations, and advocating for accommodations
in the workplace, individuals with hearing loss can overcome the challenges and continue to thrive in
their personal and professional lives.
