Leak Testing MAC Hoses

The document discusses technical challenges with replacing the refrigerant R134a, including the flammability and cost of alternatives like R1234yf. It also describes leak testing methods for mobile air conditioning hoses, comparing clamp shell testing which localizes leaks to vacuum chamber testing which allows higher throughput but requires later localization.

In a clam sh ell system, small clamps are a placed arouund the conne ectors to be
tested. The A AC hose is theen evacuated anda pressurizeed with helium m. If the
connection iss leaky, the heelium concentrration inside thhe clam shell will
w increase.
The Protec P P3000(XL) Hellium Leak Detector is then cconnected to the t clams and d
draws a sam ple from the in nner volume ofo the clam sheell. If helium iss present in
the sample, iit is then detec
cted by the Wise Technologgy helium sens sor inside the
Protec P3000 0(XL). The hig
gh flow of the Protec P30000(XL) offers so ome unique
benefits for cclam shell testing as its high flow allows foor all clam she
ells to be
tested simulta aneously. Onlly when a leak k is detected wwill the test sys

For higher th hroughput, the e complete AC C hose can be tested in a va acuum

chamber. Fo or this testing process, the hose is sealedd at its ends before

Once the cha amber lid is cllosed, vacuumm pumps pull a vacuum. The e AC hose
and the cham mber are evac aneously; subssequently the AC hose is

1. Testing the internal inte egrity of the hose,
h i.e. check if refrigerantt from one tubbe can leak
into the other

2. Testing the integrity off the hose to th he outside, i.e. check if refriggerant may le

h and detect the preseence of helium m in the
vacuum chamber.
