Solution Tut Assign 8 2023 24 Sem II

The document provides the solution steps to solve a 1D structural problem using the Rayleigh-Ritz method. Elemental stiffness matrices are formed and assembled into a global stiffness matrix. Boundary conditions are applied by elimination and the resulting system is solved for nodal displacements and support reactions.

SOLUTIONS: TUTORIAL ASSIGNMENT NO. – 8, DATE: 27th Feb 2024, MAX. MARKS: 10

TUTORIAL PROBLEM

T1. Using the elemental stiffness matrices, their assembly and elimination approach of applying
displacement boundary conditions, solve for nodal displacements and reaction forces in the following 1-
dimensional structure using Rayleigh-Ritz method. There is a rigid wall at a=2 mm from the node 6.

Solution: We need a two-stage solution. In the first stage we ignore the wall and find the displacement
of the node 6. If Q6 in the stage-1 is > a=0.5 mm, the node touches the wall, we need the second stage
solution in which we impose the essential boundary condition Q6=a=0.5 mm.
Stage-1:
Elemental stiffness matrices: It is similar to for all elements:
1 −1
𝑘𝑖 [ ] where ki is the stiffness ith element.
−1 1
Elemental local-global nodal connectivity matrix:
Element Local node=1 Local node=2
1 1 2
2 2 4
3 2 5
4 2 3
5 3 6
Writing down all the elemental stiffness matrices, their connectivity (red numbers) and assembling them
into the global stiffness matrix gives:
Essential Boundary Conditions: Q4=Q5=0.
Eliminating the 4th and 5th rows and columns from the above equation we get the reduced finite element
equation:

Solving the equation:

Since the Q6=Q3=19 mm is greater the gap with the wall, which is 2 mm, the node 6 touches the wall
and hence we need to resolve imposing it as the essential boundary condition.
Essential Boundary Conditions: Q4=Q5=0; Q6=2 mm.

Solving:

Reaction Forces: [R]=[K]{Q}

ASSIGNMENT PROBLEM

(A) Find all the elemental stiffness matrices, global stiffness matrix and global finite element equation.
Applying the essential boundary conditions by elimination approach, find the all the nodal displacements
and support reactions using Rayleigh Ritz method. The force “F3” at node 3 in N is equal to twice the
sum of the last four digits in your ID No, subject to a minimum 50 N. If it is less than 50 N, then add 50
N. Use the element numbering and node numbering given.

Solution:
