Need Of Unity Among Muslims

The word unity is derived from the word unit, which means one. Simply, we can call a nation
united when all the people of that particular nation have the same beliefs, ideas, and thoughts
and they work together with peace and harmony. Unity is no doubt a strength. It is one of the
essential components of a strong nation. The early period of Islam teaches us the message of
unity among Muslims. Unity is a fundamental principle of Islam that emphasizes the oneness of
Allah and the importance of treating fellow Muslims with love and respect. The Quran teaches
that Muslims should not divide themselves into sects and instead should unite as one ummah
(community). Unity is also considered to be a basic principle of Islam that has many aspects, such
as the oneness of Allah, the Book, the Prophet, the religion, the qiblah, and the ummah.
The Quran also emphasizes the importance of unity among Muslims. It teaches people to be
selfless and multiplies the strength of a community. The believers, whose brotherhood was
registered not just till death but eternally, laid the foundations of a civilization with such
integration as the world has never seen. These gentle people attained material and spiritual
victories which were much greater than their normal capacities would have allowed, being the
recipient of the principle in the verse;
“Many small companies have overcome a numerous companies by Allah’s leave”
(Baqarah, 2:249)
With the mystery of brotherhood and having a common goal and duty and the understanding of
unity and brotherhood which is called ‘ithar’ (preferring your brother’s desire to your own).

History reveals that the Muslims gained great dignity and enjoyed enormous prestige when they
remained united. They enjoyed big name and fame. They defeated the most powerful empires of
that time just by dint of their unity. Their glorious victory over Roman and Persian empire
expanded the boundaries of the Islamic State to the borders of Hindustan, China, Africa and
France. Despite the cultural, ethnic and geographical diversity, the Muslims remained united and
strong.
“Unity is a mercy and division is a punishment”
(Musnad Ahmad)

Unfortunately, today’s Muslims are facing many issues due to their weak unity in contrast to their
past. Muslims are divided on the basis of sects, which is contrary to the teachings of Islam. This
has led to disputes among Muslims on basic issues, making it difficult for them to present a
united front. Disunity has also made Muslim nations largely underdeveloped, poor, unskilled,
uneducated, and incapable of contributing positively towards the well-being of their faiths and
nations. It is a complex problem that requires a multifaceted solution and is surely the need of the hour. As
Allah(SWT) says;
“Hold firmly to the rope of Allah and be not divided(into groups and sects)”
[Al-Imran]

Some ways Muslims can overcome sectarianism;

Education is the key to overcoming sectarianism. Muslims need to be educated about the true
teachings of Islam, which emphasize unity and brotherhood among all Muslims. They should also
be taught about the dangers of sectarianism and how it can lead to division and conflict.
Interfaith dialogue can help Muslims understand other religions and promote tolerance and
understanding. It can also help break down barriers between different sects of Islam.
Community Engagement: Muslims should engage with their local communities to promote unity
and understanding. This can be done through community service projects, interfaith events, and
other activities that bring people together.
Leadership: Muslim leaders have a responsibility to promote unity and discourage sectarianism.
They should work towards creating an environment where all Muslims feel welcome and
included, regardless of their sect.
Media: The media can play a role in promoting unity among Muslims by highlighting stories of
cooperation and collaboration between different sects. This can help counter negative
stereotypes and promote understanding.
Political Action: Political action can also help overcome sectarianism by promoting policies that
are inclusive of all Muslims, regardless of their sect. This can include advocating for equal rights,
promoting social justice, and working towards peace.

Another challenge faced by Muslims is fundamentalism. Fundamentalism is one of the most

abused words in the world today and is often associated with extremism. However, if the
teachings of Islam are revised, it would be obvious that the past best Muslims were
fundamentalists.

Muslims also face institutional discrimination, social isolation, depression, language problems,
adjustment problems to new cultures, and homesickness when they travel abroad for studies or
work. Muslims are also facing multiple issues related to their identity, security, and economic
equity. They are unable to cope with the changes that are happening in this world and are
reversing further and further backwards.

It is important for Muslims to overcome these challenges by promoting unity among themselves.
Muslims can achieve a lot if they unite. Unity brings people together, creating love, harmony, and
generosity between them. As believers, we can use unity as a platform to spread kindness to
others, as well as an opportunity for our spiritual growth to become closer to Allah (SWT). Unity
can help Muslims regain their lost honor and reclaim disputed lands like Palestine and Kashmir. It
can also help Muslims overcome the challenges they face in the modern world, such as
Islamophobia and discrimination. As one famous quotation says;
“Where there is unity, there is victory.”
In order to achieve unity among Muslims, it is important to overcome internal and external
obstacles. Internal obstacles include ideological bias, sectarianism, and lack of trust among
different groups of Muslims . External obstacles include the efforts on the part of the enemies of
Islam to foment discord. It can also help Muslims overcome the challenges they face in the
modern world, such as Islamophobia and discrimination.

To sum up, it’s that all Muslims must uphold the flag of unity and keep it waiving in the world of
brotherhood, friendship and companionship. Instead of blowing their own trumpet, they should
struggle for the common cause.
“Unity is strength…when there is teamwork and
collaboration, wonderful things can be achieved”
