ASSIGNMENT CLASS-XII

SUB: MATHEMATICS
TOPIC : REALTIONS AND FUNCTIONS

Q.1 Show that the relation R defined by (a,b) R (c,d) , if a+d = b+c on the set N×N is an
equivalence relation.

Q.2 Prove that the relation R on the set A = {1,2,3,4,5} given by R = {(a,b) : |a–b| is even}, is
an equivalence relation.

Q.3 Let Z be the set of all integers and R be the relation on Z defined as R = {(a,b) : a, b e Z,
and (a–b) is divisible by 5}. Prove that R is an equivalence relation.

Q.4 Show that the relation S in the set A. A = {x e Z: 0 £ x £ 12} given by S = {(a,b) : a, b, e
Z,, |a–b| is divisible by 4} is an equivalence relation. Find the set of all elements related to
1.

Q.5 Let f : A → B be a given function. A relation R in set A is given by R {(a,b) e A×A : f(a)
= f(b)}, check whether R is an equivalence relation.

Q.6 Let N be the set of all natural numbers and let R be a relation on N×N defined by (a,b) R
(c,d) Û ad=bc for all (a,b), (c,d) e N×N. Show that R is an equivalence relation on N×N.

Q.7 Let a relation R on set of real numbers is defined as R = {(a,b) : 1+ab > 0, a, b e R}. Snow
that R is reflexive, symmetric but not transitive.

Q.8 Let R be the relation on N×N defined by (a,b) R (c,d) Û ad (b+c) = bc (a+d). Check
whether R is an equivalence relation on N×N.

Q.9 If R = {(x,y): x + 2y = 8} is a relation on N. Write the range of R.

Q.10 Let A = {a,b,c} and relation R be defined on A, as follows:

R = [ (a,a), (b,c), (a,b)}. Write minimum number of ordered pairs to be added in R, to make
R reflexive and transitive.

Q.11 Let A = {1,2,3, …9} and R is an equivalence relation on A×A defined by (a,b) R (c,d) if
a+d = b+c, obtain the equivalence class [(2,5)].

[Hind [(2,5)] = set of all ordered pairs related to (2,5) under the given relation].
