The document discusses hydraulic lifting machines and how they work using Pascal's law. Hydraulic lifts use a small piston to pressurize fluid that transmits the force to a larger piston, multiplying the lifting power. They have advantages like lifting heavy loads with small components but disadvantages like slow speed. Hydraulic lifts are used widely in industries and applications like vehicle repair.

INTRODUCTION

Hydraulic lifting machines are widely used for the lifting, moving and
pushing function in mining, construction and steel industries and in
material handling equipment’s. Since 1950s the applications of hydraulic
systems have been started in the industries and this form of power has
become standard for the operations of industrial equipment’s. Today,
modern automation technology has a very important place for hydraulic
systems. The reason for this is that hydraulic systems are simple,
versatile and efficient for the transmission of power. The main job of a
hydraulic system is the transmission the power as the power is changed
from one form to another. As these hydraulic systems are popularly used
in the manufacturing and production plants, therefore it is required that
they are reliable and efficient equipment’s to achieve the desired results
from them like transmission of large amount of forces with the use of
smaller components which means good power intensity and precise
positioning of the equipment with consistent power output. These systems
operate smoothly with reversal function possibility and can work well in
high temperature environment conditions. These systems are thus cost
considerably to provide the above functions and therefore the same
system is modified using a simple rack and pinion mechanism to lower its
cost and allowing further research and modification in it to make it able to
provide all the above functions with the same efficiency.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

I would like to express my sincere gratitude to my teacher Mr.Ganesh for

his vital support, guidance, and encouragement, without which this project
would not have come forth. I would also express my gratitude to the other
staff of physics department for their support during the making of the
project.
Secondly I would also like to thank my parents and friends who helped
me a lot in finalizing this project within the limited time.

METHODOLOGY

This project is based on Pascal Law concept

PASCAL'S LAW

Pascal's law states that when there is an increase in pressure at any

point in a confined fluid, there is an equal increase at every other point in
the container. Applied to a more complex system below such as Hydraulic
car lift Pascal's law allows forces to be multiplied.

WORKING
Pascal's Principle states that pressure in a liquid is independent of
direction.
Pressure is force divided by area, so force exerted by a liquid is equal to
the pressure times the area. A hydraulic lift has a small piston in a
cylinder. If you exert a force on the piston, it will create a pressure in the
fluid. The lift also has a second, large area cylinder and piston. The fluid
creates a pressure in this cylinder that exerts a much larger force on the
piston because of its larger area. Therefore the lift has a mechanical
advantage. Of course, energy is still conserved, so the small piston must
move much farther than the large piston.
An automobile lift, used in many automotive repair shops, allows the
operator to use very little force to lift an automobile off the ground, by
pushing liquid from a small-diameter cylinder and piston through a thin
tube that expands into a larger-diameter cylinder and piston, which is
located beneath the vehicle to be lifted. Since the liquid cannot be
compressed like air, the liquid from the small cylinder is pushed into the
large cylinder, forcing the large piston to move upward.

ADVANTAGES
• These lifts can easily lift heavy objects and machinery in companies and
in warehouses.
• Hydraulic lifts also help to reduce the amount of time for unloading and
loading.
• In case you are looking to buy a hydraulic lift for the five-story building,
the types of lifts would be outstanding & it is cost effective.
• Hydraulic lifts can also be used for any of the nearby floors, In case of
an emergency.
• These lifts are highly durable and very easy to use and maintain.
• Hydraulic lifts can be easily set in home or offices for those people can't
use stairs.
• These lifts produce very less noise.
• Hydraulic lifts can help to move the work material in an easy and safe
manner with no difficulties at the desired positions.
The elevator will fall no faster than oil can escape in case of line breaks,
but hydraulic lifts are safer than elevators.
• These lifts are also cheaper than electric lifts.
• Hydraulic lifts are quiet and smooth and hence can use in homes and
offices.

DISADVANTAGES

• Slow speed- the main disadvantage of hydraulic lift is that it cannot

travel at more than 150 feet in a minute.
• Require control room - the hydraulic fluid oil varies with temperature, so
an efficient machine-room control system.
• Produce high-heat- This type lifts are the high-heat producing system.
• Performance problem- at the time of operation the machine oil may leak
into the ground and cause pollution in groundwater.
APPLICATIONS

Hydraulic lifts are used in an extensive assortment of automotive,

shipping and waste removal applications. They are an effective means of
raising and lowering people, equipment, cargo and machines, and find
regular use in automobile repair. A vast number of trucks utilize hydraulic
lifts to facilitate the transport of heavy freight, and hydraulic lifts provide
an excellent solution to certain nursing and disability concerns.

Hydraulic lifts have numerous construction uses, including their function

as components in forklifts and other transport machinery. These systems
are often integrated into the vehicles and devices, and use the internal
motors to drive the hydraulic pump and pressurize the oil. In similar
fashion, hydraulic lifts are found in many public buses and vans, as well
as hospital and nursing home vehicles, where they provide those with
movement difficulties access to otherwise problematic locations. Many
older facilities still use hydraulic lifts as elevators, although distances are
relatively limited
CONCLUSION

We conclude that Hydraulic Lift is made with Hydraulic fluid mechanism.

We can implement this concept in robotic arms, conveyor, load lifting
ramps and heavy load turning table. A hydraulic lift moves objects using
the force created by pressure on a liquid inside a cylinder that moves a
piston upward. The principle for hydraulic lifts is based on Pascal‘s law for
generating force or motion, which states that pressure change on an
incompressible liquid in a confined space is passed equally throughout
the liquid in all directions. Hydraulic lifts provide controlled and precision
force. The sturdy and durable design of hydraulic lifts has made them
popular in a wide variety of industries. The Occupational Safety and
Health Administration (OSHA) and the American National Standards
Institute (ANSI) have specific requirements regarding the operation of
hydraulic lifts and training for operators. Lift tables have become popular
as work surfaces that can be positioned at the exact height necessary to
package, assemble, organize, or position items.
