Chapter 10: Motion Class IX Science Assignment

1. A train is travelling at a speed of 60 km/h. Brakes are applied so as to produce a uniform acceleration of -0.5 m/s2.
Find how far the train will go before it is brought to rest.

2. A Truck covers 30km at a uniform speed of 30km/hr. What should be its speed for the next 90km if the average
speed for the entire journey is 60km/h?

3. A cyclist moving on a circular track of radius 50m completes one revolution in 4 minutes. What is his (a) average
speed (b) average velocity in one full revolution?

4. A car moves in a straight line from rest . It accelerates with 2m/s2. Solve the following table

Time 2 sec ? ? 10 min

Displacement ? ? 25 m ?

Velocity ? 10 m/s ? ?

5. A particle moves 3m north, then 4m east and finally 6m south. Calculate the distance travelled and the displace-
ment.

6. Four speed-time graphs are shown in figure F :

Which graph represents the following cases?

(a) A ball thrown vertically upwards and returning to the hand of the thrower.

(b) A body decelerating to a constant speed and then accelerating

7. A particle is moving in a circle of diameter 20 m. What is its distance and as per the table given below
S. No. Rounds Displace- distance

1 1
2 1.5
3 2
4 2.5

8. A train starting from a railway station and moving with uniform acceleration attains a speed 72km/h in 10 sec. Find
its acceleration.

9. A bus decreases its speed from 80 km/h to 60 km/h in 5 s. find the acceleration.

10. On a 120 km track a train travels the first 30 km at a uniform speed of 30 km/h. Calculate the speed with which

the train should move rest of the track so as to get the average speed of 60 km/h for the entire trip.

11. The velocity of an object is decreasing with passage of time. What conclusion do you draw about the acceleration of
the object?

12. What you can say about the motion of an object if its speed-time graph is a straight line parallel to the time axis?

13. A particle moves 3m north, then 4m east and finally 6m south. Calculate the distance travelled and the displace-
ment.

14. Draw a velocity-time graphs for the following:

15. (i) a body moving with uniform velocity (ii) a body moving with uniform acceleration

16. A swimmer swims in a 90m long pool. He covers the distance of 180m by swimming from one end to other end back
along the same path. If he covers the first 90m at a speed of 2m/s, then how fast he swims so that his average speed is
3m/s?

17. A farmer moves along the boundary of a square field of side 10m in 40 s. What will be the magnitude of displace-
ment of the farmer at the end of 2 minutes 20 seconds from the initial position?

18. Car A travelled a distance of 120 km/h in 3 hours whereas another car 'B' travelled a distance of 180 km/h in 4
hours. Which car travelled faster?

19. An object travels 16m in 4 s and then another 16m in 2 s. What is the average speed of the object?

20. A train is moving out of a railway station. Is the platform at rest or in motion with respect to the train?

21. Two moving objects appear to be stationary to each other. When is this possible?

22. Displacement of a body is 3m when the distance travelled by it is 2m. Can it be true? Justify.

23. The velocity of an object is decreasing with passage of time. What conclusion do you draw about the acceleration of
the object?

24. A bus decreases its speed from 80 km/h to 60 km/h in 5 s. Find the acceleration,

25. On a 120 km track a train travels the first 30 km at a uniform speed of 30 km/h. Calculate the speed with which the
train should move the rest of the track so as to get the average speed of 60 km/h for the entire trip.

26. What do you mean by positive, negative acceleration? Give one example each,

27. What will you say about the motion of a body if its distance-time graph is a straight line having a constant angle with
a time axis? Draw a graph and justify your answer.

29. Why is the motion of an athlete moving along the circular path an accelerated motion?

30. Can a body exist in a state of absolute rest or of absolute motion? Explain with an example.

31. Distinguish between distance and displacement.

32. Mention three differences between speed and velocity.
