Write a diary entry. You are Portia.

Bassanio just won the casket challenge

(writing this right after this happened). In
your diary entry, you must include:
- details about the casket challenge
Suitors have to choose correct casket
between gold, silver and lead (correct
box has Portia’s portrait)
Prince of Morocco chose gold (it was
wrong, inside= skull)- believed it was the
most valuable but I believe my father
wrote “what many men desire” to
represent my wealth.
The prince of arragon chose silver
(inside: portrait of a clown) – he said he
won’t choose the same as other men
Inscriptions e.g. “Who chooseth me…”
-your feelings about Bassanio
In the end, I was happy he chose the
correct box because I love him.
In the beginning, I was worried and
didn’t want Bassanio to do the challenge
because because if he gets it wrong, I
won’t be able to see him again.
-how did he win + reason why he won
Bassanio chose the lead box (inside is my
portrait)
Guided by Portia’s sea-blue eyes, which
told him that true beauty is on the inside
 I think my father made the lead one
correct because he believed that a
man who will truly love me will
choose the lead one.
Diary:
“Dear Diary” or “date and weather”
First person
Don’t write “Love, Portia”
Show affectionate language to Bassanio
e.g. I love him so much, My sweet
bassanio….

Mar 19th Sunny

Dear Diary,

Today has been an extraordinary day, filled with anticipation, hope, and, against all odds, joy. I
can hardly contain my excitement as I pen down this entry, knowing that the events of this day
will forever alter the course of our lives.

Bassanio, the man to whom I have entrusted my heart, has emerged victorious in the casket
challenge. I watched nervously as each suitor, one by one, attempted to choose the right casket
and claim my hand in marriage. The tension in the air was palpable, and my heart pounded with
anxious anticipation. Each suitor had to choose one casket out of three boxes: gold, silver and
lead. Each box had inscriptions written on them.

Before Bassanio’s arrival, The Prince of Morocco and the Prince of Arragon had their go at the
challenge. The Prince of Morocco saw the golden box’s inscription, “Who chooseth me shall
gain what many men desire”. He believed that the most valuable box is the correct answer, but to
his shock, what was inside was a Death’s Head. I think my father did this because he thought that
those who are only interested in my family’s wealth would choose this box. I was relieved, as the
only man I am fond of is Bassanio. The Prince of Arragon chose the silver one, claiming that he
won’t choose the gold one because he is not like “many men”. He was so surprised when he saw
a portrait of a clown inside.

When he first arrived at my mansion, I told him to deny the invitation to attempt the
challenge. I loved him so much that the chance of not being able to see him again if he
chooses the wrong casket was too heart-breaking for me. However, he looked determined
and said he will do it. As Bassanio stepped forward to make his choice, I held my breath, my
eyes fixed on him. I knew in that moment that his love for me, his unwavering devotion,
would guide him to the right path. His understanding of my true worth; my inner beauty
surpassed the shallow allure of gold and the deceptive allure of silver. He later told me that
it was my sea-blue eyes that gave him the clue. When he chose the simple leaden casket, I
could hardly contain my elation. The reason behind Bassanio's victorious choice lies in his
unwavering commitment to uncovering the truth. He saw through the façade of the caskets,
recognizing that outward beauty does not always reflect inner worth. I felt his genuine love
for me, his understanding of my soul, and his belief in our shared future. I am humbled and
deeply grateful to have found such a remarkable man. The more time passes, the stronger
my love for Bassanio continues to grow. Unlike the other suitors who valued wealth,
Bassanio recognizes that true love isn’t confined to material possessions.

Oh, Diary, this day will forever be etched in my memory. Bassanio's victory in the casket
challenge has sealed our bond, affirming the purity and authenticity of our love. My heart is
filled with joy and gratitude as I eagerly anticipate our future together. I am grateful for his
unwavering devotion and the boundless love he has bestowed upon me. I gave him a ring
afterwards to solidify our connection and my heart is soaring that he loves me as much as I
love him! Tonight, I will sleep with a heart full of happiness and dreams of the beautiful life
that awaits us.
