**Project: Pneumatic Traffic Light Controller**

**Objective:**
Design and build a miniature traffic light system using pneumatic actuators for control,
integrating electronic, electrical, pneumatic, structural, and mechanical components.

**Components:**

1. **Traffic Light Structure:**

- Lightweight materials for the frame (e.g., wood, acrylic)
- Three LED lights for each signal (Red, Yellow, Green)

2. **Pneumatic Actuators:**
- Small pneumatic cylinders (one for each traffic light)
- Pneumatic tubing
- Control valves for each cylinder

3. **Electronic Control System:**

- Microcontroller (Arduino, for example)
- Transistors or relays for interfacing between microcontroller and pneumatic valves
- Resistors for LED connections
4. **Power Supply:**
- Batteries or power supply for the electrical components

**Assembly Steps:**

1. **Design:**
- Sketch the structure of the traffic light system, including the placement of lights and
pneumatic actuators.
- Ensure the structural stability of the frame.

2. **Traffic Light Assembly:**

- Mount the LEDs for each traffic light signal onto the frame.
- Connect the LEDs to the microcontroller with appropriate resistors.

3. **Pneumatic Actuator Integration:**

- Attach a pneumatic cylinder to each traffic light to simulate the movement of the light.
- Connect the cylinders to the pneumatic control valves.

4. **Electronic Connections:**
- Connect the microcontroller to the pneumatic control valves using transistors or relays.

5. **Power Supply Setup:**

- Connect batteries or a power supply to the microcontroller and LEDs.

6. **Programming:**
- Write a simple program to control the timing of the traffic light sequence.
- Include logic for the pneumatic actuators to simulate the changing lights.

7. **Testing:**
- Test the traffic light system to ensure that the lights change according to the programmed
sequence.
- Adjust the program or make any necessary mechanical adjustments.

**Note:**
This project provides a hands-on experience in integrating multiple engineering systems. It
covers structural design, electronics, pneumatics, and basic programming. The complexity can
be adjusted based on the students' skill level and the available resources. Additionally,
students can explore adding features like pedestrian crossings or incorporating sensors for
more advanced functionality.
