READING FOR PUPIL’S IN CLASS SIX

Once upon a time, some wild animals found a man’s shoe lying on the ground in the forest.
The tortoise was the first to see it. He smelt it and turned it over, but he did not know what it
was. So he called all the other animals and asked them to look at the strange black thing on the
ground. None of them really knew what it was. But the lion said that he knew. ‘It’s easy to see
that it is a piece of bark from a tree; he said. It’s the same colour.’
‘No, no, that isn’t right; cried the leopard. ‘Look at the hole in it. It is the skin of some fruit.’
‘Don’t be silly; said the monkey. ‘Look, it’s hard. It is the shell of a big nut.’ ‘You are all wrong;
the bush-rat said. ‘That hole is for a bird to go in. The thing is a bird’s nest, and that deep part is
for the eggs.’
‘None of you is right; the goat said. ‘Look at the root; and he pointed to the long shoe-lace. ‘You
can see that it must be a plant of some kind.’
Then the hare spoke. All the animals thought that the hare was very wise, and so they listened
to him very carefully. The hare said that it was a man’s shoe.
‘What?’ cried all the other animals. ‘What is a man and what is a shoe?’
‘A man is a thing with two legs; said the hare. ‘He is like a bird, but he has no feathers. He can
walk and talk and eat like us, and he can do a lot of things that we can’t do.’
‘That’s silly; said the leopard. ‘How can a thing with only two legs do things that we can’t do?
We have four legs.’
And the birds said, ‘What thing can have two legs and no feathers?’
‘I know that it is a shoe; the hare cried. ‘I have seen a lot of them. Men make them and put them
on their feet. And they called them shoes.’
‘Shoes! Shoes!’ shouted the animals. ‘We have never heard of them. It’s not true! You are not
telling the truth.’
Then they told him to leave the forest, and they chased him far away. As the hare ran away, he
said, ‘But it was a shoe.’ And of course it was.

One day Bra Rabbit met Alligator. He did not like the smell on Alligator’s face. He was afraid
Alligator was going to eat him. But Bra Rabbit was clever. ‘Look, I have some fish for you,’
he said.
‘My wife is very fond of little fish,’ said Alligator. ‘You must come and give them to her.’
So they went to see Mrs Alligator. She was very pleased with the fish. ‘You must stay and
have supper with us; she said.
After supper, Alligator said, ‘It is too late to go home now. You must stay the night. We will
send you home to your wife and children in the morning.
So Bra Rabbit stayed the night. The house was rather small and he had to sleep with the
children. The children, however, were still in their eggs – ten eggs in all.
During the night, greedy Bra Rabbit felt hungry. So he ate nine of the eggs. There was only
one left.
Next morning, Bra Rabbit felt very frightened. He must not let Alligator know about the
eggs. But Bra Rabbit was clever. ‘You have a lot of work to do,’ he said. ‘Let me help you. I
will wash the children for you.
So Bra Rabbit washed the one egg that was left. Then he put some mud on it and wash it
again. He washed that egg ten times all together!
By that time Mrs Alligator had cooked a nice breakfast. Bra Rabbit ate a lot. Then Alligator
put him in a boat. There were two big fish to row the boat. One fish could not hear properly,
and the other could not speak properly.
Soon Alligator found that nine of the eggs had gone. The boat was halfway across the big
river by now.
‘Fish, fish, bring back Bra Rabbit,’ shouted Alligator.
‘What did he say?’ asked the fish that could not hear properly.
‘Gulp! Gulp!’ said the fish that could not speak properly.
‘He said that there was a storm coming,’ shouted Bra Rabbit. ‘Row fast!’
The fish that could not hear properly heard this and rowed as fast as he could.
‘Gulp! Gulp!’ said the other fish.
But the fish that could not hear continued to row hard until they reached land.
Then Bra Rabbit jumped out and ran home. And that is why Alligator does not like Bra
Rabbit.

Once upon time the animals of the forest wanted to dance. They had no drum. So they decided
to make one. They needed some skin to cover the drum. Every animal expect the mouse refused
to give piece of his ear. The mouse would not give anything. Every time the other animals asked
him for a piece of his ear, he ran into his hole.
‘We will not let you beat the drum when we have made it,’ said the other animals.
The animals sewed all the different pieces of ear together. When the drum was finished, it looked
like a big beautiful flower.
The night that it was finished, they had a great feast. All the animals were invited, expect the
mouse.
First, the elephant was asked to beat the drum. He made a horrible. No one could dance to it.
Then the rhinoceros was asked to beat it. He made an even worse noise.
All the animals tried to beat the drum. But none of them knew how to beat it properly. No one
could dance to the sound they made. In the end all the animals went home feeling disappointed.
As soon as they had all gone, the mouse came out of his hole. He started beating the drum very
skillfully. The drum made a beautiful sound. All the animals came out and started dancing.
They wanted to know who the drummer was. As the mouse was so small, they could not see him.
So they sent the elephant first to find out. But when the mouse saw him coming, he ran back to
his hole.
Then they sent the hyena, and then the lion, and then the rabbit. But each time the mouse sow
an animal coming, he stopped beating the drum and ran back to his hole.
Finally, the cat was sent to find out who the drummer was. The mouse did not hear the cat
coming, because he moved so quickly. The cat jumped on the mouse and ate him. Then the
beating stopped altogether.
When the cat got back to the other animals, they asked him whether he had seen the drummer.
‘Yes, it was a mouse,’ the cat replied. ‘I caught him and ate him.’
The other animals became very angry because now they had no drummer. They beat the cat hard.
But ever since then cats have gone on eating mice.
