EXPERIMENT 3

PREPARATION AND STANDARDIZATION OF HCl

SOLUTION WITH PRIMARY STANDARD Na₂CO₃ SOLUTION
ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY

1.State the objective of this experiment.

To prepare an acid solution from a concentrated HCl and to determine the accurate concentration of
the HCl solution by standardization with standard solution.

2.Describe the procedure (in brief).

A. Preparation of HCl solution
2.10 mL of HCl was measured by using a 10-mL measuring cylinder and transferred into a 250 mL
volumetric flask which already contained some distilled water. The measuring cylinder is rinsed with
distilled water and transferred into the volumetric flask. The volumetric flask was filled with more
water until it reached the calibration mark and sealed with a stopper and turned it upside down a few
times.

B. Standardization of HCl solution

The burette was filled with the prepared diluted HCl, and the initial burette reading was recorded.
25.0 mL of the standard Na2CO3 was pipetted into a 250 mL conical flask. 3 drops of methyl orange
were added to the conical flask as indicator. The Na2CO3 in the conical flask was titrated with the HCl
from the burette slowly while shaking the flask until the indicator colour changed from yellow to red.
The reading at the end point of the titration was recorded. The experiment was repeated 3 times and
all the readings were recorded in a table.

Average volume of HCl:
4
146.7 mL
= 4
= 36.7 mL
Molarity of Na2CO3 (from Exp.2): 0.05 M

QUESTIONS
a) Based on the information in Table 1, calculate the molarity of the concentrated HCl
solution.
Molarity of the concentrated HCl
37 1 mol 1.19 g 1000 mL
= × × ×
100 36.5 g 1 mL 1L
mol
= 12. 063
L
= 12. 063 M of concentrated HCl

b) What volume of the concentrated HCl is needed to prepare 250 mL 0.1 M HCl solution?
Using the dilution formula,
M1V1 = M2V2; M1 = 12.062 M, V1 =?, M2 = 0.1 M, V2 = 250 mL
12.063 (V1) = (0.1) (250)
25
V1 = mL
12.063
= 2.0725 mL
≈ 2.1 mL of HCl

c) Write a balanced equation for the reaction between HCl and Na2CO3.

Na2CO3 + 2HCl → 2NaCl + H2O + CO2

ANALYTICAL CHEMISTRY
d) Using the data above and the stoichiometric ratio from the equation, calculate the exact
molarity of the HCl solution.
Ma =? , Va = 36.7 mL , Mb = 0.05 M , Vb = 25.0 mL
Using the stoichiometric equation:
MaVa = a
MbVb b

Ma (36.7) 2
=
(0.05)(25) 1

36.7 Ma = 2
1.25 1
36.7Ma = 2.5
2.5
Ma =
36.7
= 0.068 M

CONCLUSION
To prepare a standard HCl solution, we need to find the molarity first by dividing the molar mass
from density of HCl and using the dilution equation to find the volume which is needed. From the
titration experiment that was conducted before, the accurate concentration of HCl is calculated to be
0.068 M.
