Series-Parallel Connection

READ

Sometimes both series and parallel connections of resistors are used in single circuit. In
determining the current, voltage and resistance with the circuits in each part consider the
figure below.
A circuit composed of a 24V battery and four resistors, whose resistances are 110, 180,
220, and 250Ω.Find ( a ) the total current supplied by the battery and (b) the voltage between
points A and B in the circuit.
By applying the Ohms Law, I=V/R, where R is the equivalent resistance of four resistors.
The equivalent of resistance can be calculated by dealing the circuits in parts. The voltage
between the points A and B is also given by Ohms law, V=IR where I is the current and R is
the equivalent resistance between the two points.

Solution:
(a) The 220Ω resistor and the 250Ω resistor are in series, so the total resistance is
470Ω.The resistor is in parallel with 180Ω resistor. Their equivalent can be solve by:

RT = = 130Ω

110 Ω A 110Ω

220Ω
+ 24V 180Ω +
24V 180Ω 470Ω
-
250Ω -

The circuit is now equivalent to a circuit containing a 110Ω resistor is in series

with 130Ω resistor. The combination acts like a single resistor whose resistance is
R=110Ω +130Ω = 240Ω. The total current from battery is, then,

I= = = 0.10A
(b) The current I= 0.10 A passes through the resistance between points A and B.
Therefore, Ohm’s law indicates that the voltage across the 130Ω resistor between
points A and B is VAB = IRAB = (0.10A) (130Ω) = 13V
