Information and Communication Technology 7
You may be aware of the use of different technologies such as radio,
television, computer, etc., in the teaching-learning process.
In fact, all these technologies have transformed the teaching and
learning process.
Radio, television and newer digital technologies such as computers,
mobile and the Internet constitute Information and Communication
Technologies.
They have been visualized as powerful teaching- learning tools for
optimizing learning outcomes of learners.
Information and Communication Technology 8
Information and Communications Technology (ICT) is an extended
term for information technology (IT).
Compared to IT, ICT:
stresses the role of unified communications and
integrates the telecommunications (wired and wireless signals), computers
as well as necessary enterprise software, middleware, storage, and audio-
visual systems.
Thereby, ICT enables users to access, store, transmit, and manipulate
information.
Definition of ICT 9
ICT has no universal definition, as the concepts, methods and
applications involved in ICT are constantly evolving on an almost daily
basis.
The broadness of ICT covers any product that will store, retrieve,
manipulate, transmit or receive information electronically in a digital
form.
These functions are attained through the use of digital gadgets for
instance personal computers, digital television, email, robots, etc.
Definition of ICT 10
But what is computing?
Computing is any goal-oriented activity requiring, benefiting
from, or creating computing machinery.
It includes the study and experimentation of algorithmic
processes and development of both hardware and software.
Definition of ICT 11
ICT is the technology that supports activities involving information.
Such activities include gathering, processing, storing and presenting
data.
Increasingly these activities also involve collaboration and
communication.
Hence IT has become ICT.
Definition of ICT (Summarized) 12
A good way to think about ICT is to consider all the uses of digital
technology that already exist to help individuals, businesses and
organizations use information.
ICT covers any product that will store, retrieve, manipulate, transmit or
receive information electronically in a digital form.
For example, personal computers, digital television, email, robots.
ICT is defined as the combination of informatics technology with other
related technologies, specifically communication technology.
ICT 13
ICT refers to the use of new or modern technology to:
Carry-out analysis
Store data
Process data and
Communicate or transmit and receive data.
ICT 14
Information and Communication Technology
Information:
Data which can be:
Recorded
Organized and
Interpreted within a context in order to convey meaning.
Example: National Database & Registration Authority:
Collects data from people.
Organizes and compiles with the help of people.
Produces National Identity (NID) cards.
ICT 15
Information and Communication Technology
Communication:
Transfer of ideas and messages among persons through different:
Systems
Devices or
Media such as:
Computer
Internet
Cell phone
Telephone or
Radio etc.
ICT 16
Information and Communication Technology
Technology:
Generally defined as:
Making
Modification
Adaptation and
Usage of:
Tools
Techniques
Systems or Machines
For the purpose of solving problems or achieving goals in a less time period.

Meaning and Nature of ICT 20
IT and ICT are very often interchangeably used in the context of
modern technology infrastructure.
ICT is a broad and comprehensive term, which comprises information
technology and communication technology.
Information technology includes radio, television, computer and
Internet, teleconferencing and mobile.
All these information technologies are powered by mainly two types of
communication technologies.
These are satellite based communication and terrestrial based
communication.
