ASSIGNMENT 3 DUE DATE: 22nd MAY 2024

1. A bullet of mass 15.8 x 10-3 kg is fired from a pistol into a ballistic pendulum
whose block is of mass 5.68 kg. The bullet-block combination rises through
a vertical distance of 7.79 x 10-2 m as shown below. What was the speed of
the bullet just before hitting the block if the collision was perfectly elastic?
[10]

2. In one model of the hydrogen atom, an electron orbits a proton in a circle of

radius 5.28 × 10−11 m with a speed of 2.18 × 106 m/s
(a) What is the acceleration of the electron in this model? [3]
(b) What is the period of the motion? [3]

3. A coin placed 30.0cm from the center of a rotating, horizontal turntable

slips when its speed is 50.0 cm/s
(a) What provides the central force when the coin is stationary relative to
the turntable? [3]
(b) What is the coefficient of static friction between the coin and turntable?
[3]

4. A particle is subject to a force Fx that varies with position as shown below.

Find the work done by the force on the body as it moves (a) from x =0 to x
=5.0 m, (b) from x =5.0 m to x =10 m and (c) from x =10 m to x =15 m. (d)
What is the total work done by the force over the distance x =0 to x =15 m?
[10]

5. A 40 kg box initially at rest is pushed 5.0 m along a rough horizontal floor
with a constant applied horizontal force of 130 N. If the coefficient of friction
between the box and floor is 0.30, find ;
(a) the work done by the applied force, [2]
(b) the energy lost due to friction, [3]
(c) the change in kinetic energy of the box, and [2]
(d) the final speed of the box. [3]

6. A bead slides without friction on a loop–the–loop track shown below. If the

bead is released from a height h =3.5R, what is its speed at point A? [8]
