SET A
1. a) Simplify : 200 + 18 - 2
5
𝐛) 2+ 5
[2 + 2 = 4 marks]
2. 3x + ky = 8
x – 2ky = 5
are simultaneous equations where k is a constant.
a. Show that x = 3
1
b. Given that y = 2 , determine the value of k.

[ 3 + 1 = 4 marks]

3. On a coordinate grid, shade the region that satisfies the inequalities: 𝑦 > (𝑥 − 3)2 , 𝑦 + 𝑥 ≥ 5 and 𝑦 < 𝑥 − 1
[5 marks]

4. The function 𝑓 is defined as 𝑓 𝑥 = 22𝑥 − 20 2𝑥 + 64, 𝑥 ∈ ℝ.

a. Write 𝑓(𝑥) in the form 2𝑥 − 𝑎 2𝑥 − 𝑏 , where 𝑎 and 𝑏 are real constants.

b. Hence find the two roots of 𝑓 𝑥 .

[2 + 2 = 4 marks]
5. Give your answers in set notation.
a) Solve the inequality 5𝑥 − 8 > 𝑥 + 12.
b) Solve the inequality 𝑥 2 + 16𝑥 − 36 > 0.
[2 + 4 = 6 marks]
6. Given that f(x) = (x – 10)(𝑥 2 - 2x) + 12x
(a) Express f(x) in the form x(a𝑥 2 + bx + c) where a, b and c are real constants.
(b) Hence factorise f(x) completely.
(c) Sketch the graph of y = f(x) showing clearly the points where the graph intersects the axes.
[ 3 + 3 + 3 = 9 marks]
7. For each pair of functions:
i. Sketch the graphs of y = f(x) and y = g(x) on the same axes.
ii. Find the coordinates of any points of intersection.
iii. Write down the solutions to the inequality f(x) ≤ g(x)
a) f(x) = 3x – 7 , g(x) = 13 - 2x
b) f(x) = 7 - 𝑥 2 , g(x) = 2x - 8
[4 + 4 = 8 marks]
