University of Otago Pathway │ Te Huarahi Scholarship

The University of Otago Pathway │ Te Huarahi Scholarship was established in 2021 to encourage
students to undertake study in order to qualify for University admission and enable success towards
undergraduate degree programmes.

Eligibility
Applications are open to all students applying for admission into the Pathway │ Te Huarahi programme.
Those who have received a Ngā Koroī or a POPO scholarship, or are a Government sponsored student,
are ineligible to receive a Pathway │ Te Huarahi scholarship.

Application Process
Every applicant must:
⬧ Submit an application to the University of Otago by:
• 31 January for Intake One
• 31 May for Intake Two
• 30 September for Intake Three
⬧ Provide, in the specified format, a declaration of personal and parental assets and income.
⬧ Attach to their application, or authorise access to, their most recent secondary school results in
NCEA or equivalent.

Selection Process
Selection for the scholarship will be made by:
⬧ A panel consisting of the Director Pathway │ Te Huarahi, the Manager Undergraduate
Entrance Scholarships, the Head of Schools’ Liaison, and the Manager International Marketing
and Recruitment, or their nominees; or
⬧ From the recommendation of an Undergraduate Entrance Scholarship selection panel.
The panels shall consider the following factors in recommending the award of the scholarships:
⬧ Academic ability (a minimum of NCEA Level 2 awarded with merit, or equivalent, is required
for consideration).
⬧ Financial need.
⬧ Potential and motivation to succeed at university.
In addition to these primary criteria, the panel may also give consideration to life circumstances which
present significant barriers to studying at university.

Financial Process
The standard minimum value of the scholarship is $5,000. However, for exceptional students it may be
awarded at a higher value.

General Arrangements
The scholarship to be awarded is normally received in the form of reduced accommodation fees, where
a recipient has received placement in a University owned or affiliated accommodation, and/or tuition
fees for the first year of study at the University of Otago

Tenure
⬧ The Scholarship will be for two consecutive teaching periods of Pathway │ Te Huarahi study
only.
⬧ The Scholarship will usually be taken up in the year for which it is awarded; however, students
may apply in writing to the Manager, Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships for permission to
defer starting the scholarship for up to one year. Deferrals will not usually be granted where a
recipient is proceeding to study at another tertiary institution prior to taking up the scholarship.

Other Requirements
Each Scholarship recipient must:
⬧ Be enrolled full-time, in two consecutive teaching periods of the Pathway │ Te Huarahi
programme.
⬧ Agree to reasonable requests from the University of Otago to appropriately represent the
University and the scholarship.

Terms and Conditions


⬧ A scholarship application must normally have been received by the University of Otago by the
due date.

⬧ Applications from New Zealand school leavers will only be considered if they have undertaken
study in Year 13 or have left secondary school a year or more prior to enrolling in the Pathway
│ Te Huarahi programme.

⬧ The scholarship is only available to students enrolled in the Pathway │ Te Huarahi programme.
Students commencing studies in the Bridging Programme are not eligible to receive the
scholarship until they commence the Pathway │ Te Huarahi programme.

⬧ Payment of the scholarships will normally be made as a contribution toward Residential


College or University Flat fees. Recipients not resident in University of Otago Residential
Colleges, University-Affiliated Colleges or University Flats but eligible for Fees Free may
have payment terms specified in their letter of offer or in further correspondence with the
University of Otago.

⬧ Payments for scholarship recipients who commence their full-time study in the Pathway │ Te
Huarahi programme in Intake 3 will normally receive half the scholarship amount as a
contribution to University Accommodation fees. The remaining half of the scholarship will be
received when full-time study commences in the first teaching period of the following year.
Recipients not resident in University of Otago Residential Colleges, University-Affiliated
Colleges, or University Flats may have payment terms specified in their letter of offer or in
further correspondence with the University of Otago.

⬧ The University of Otago may, at any time, suspend or terminate the scholarship, or require the
forfeiture of such proportion of the scholarship as the University of Otago may determine, if it
is not satisfied that the recipient is not enrolled and studying full-time, full-year, and diligently
pursuing a full-time, full-year programme or if the recipient has brought the University of
Otago or the scholarship into disrepute.

⬧ Upon the termination of a student’s enrolment for any reason, their withdrawal, or stopping
study, entitlement to scholarship funding shall be cancelled. In such circumstances, the
University may also require repayment (in part or full) of any scholarship payments already
made.

⬧ If, during the tenure of the award, a student withdraws from any paper(s) or their University
Accommodation after the University’s withdrawal deadline, entitlement to scholarship funding
shall be cancelled and liability for relevant fees met from the Scholarship may reinstated and
those fees recovered from the recipient.

⬧ The receipt of a Scholarship will be noted on the recipient’s University of Otago academic
transcript. The recipient agrees to their award of a Scholarship being disclosed within the
University and to third parties for purposes reasonably connected with the Scholarship.

⬧ The University Accommodation and tuition fees met from Scholarships under these terms and
conditions will normally be the core fees for which the recipient is liable. Scholarships will not
normally be able to be used for accommodation acceptance fees, insurance or other sundry fees
and charges.

⬧ A recipient can only be awarded the Pathway │ Te Huarahi scholarship once.

⬧ If the student is not able to commence their studies by the enrolment date stated in their Offer
of Place, the scholarship is no longer valid. If the student’s enrolment is moved to a subsequent
start date, they will be reassessed for the scholarship to ensure they are still eligible.

⬧ Pathway │ Te Huarahi scholarship recipients studying the Certificate programme are eligible
to apply for Undergraduate Entrance Scholarships to support them in their post-Pathway study
but will need to apply in the application period preceding the commencement of their
undergraduate studies.

⬧ Any variation or exemption of these Terms and Conditions must be approved by the Convenor
of the Scholarships and Prizes Committee or nominee.
