SY 2023-2024

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the 40 minutes lesson, 80% of the grade 7 students are
expected to do the following with at least 75% proficiency level:
1. Students will be able to identify the five major layers of the Earth's
atmosphere: troposphere, stratosphere, mesosphere, thermosphere, and
exosphere.
2. Students will develop a sense of wonder about the Earth's atmosphere
and its importance for life.
3. Students will be able to create a labeled drawing that accurately depicts
the following layers of the Earth's atmosphere
II. SUBJECT MATTER
Concept: Science 7
Sub-concept: Layers of Atmosphere

Materials: PPT presentation, Smart Tv, Laptop,
Methodology: 4A’s (Activity, Analysis, Abstraction, Application)

Teachers’ Activity Students Activity

A. Learning procedure
B. Prayer
Before we begin our class let us
pray

C. Greetings
Good afternoon, Class! Good afternoon, ma’am Rona!

D. Checking of attendance
*The teacher is calling the students
one by one.* Once I called your name, say
your favorite fruit. Apple maam…..banana ma’am….

E. Review
Alright then class, can you still
remember our last topic?
Yes, ma’am!
Wow, that’s great! Now to test if you
really remember. May I call
someone from the class to give me
their insights or takeaways during
our last discussion.
Our last topic was all about soil conservation
Correct! Lets give him/her 3 claps.

F. Motivation
Scrambled Words
*The teacher starts to show the *Students start answering
scramble words
G. Activity
Before we proceed to our proper
lesson lets have a short activity in
connection with our next topic.

*The teacher will let the students

share their insights in regards with
what they’ve draw.
H. Analysis
Class what do you think our next
topic? Layers of atmosphere ma’am Rona

Great! Lets give him/her 5 claps!

I. Lesson Proper
The atmosphere is not a uniform blanket;
it's composed of distinct layers.
Five main layers, each with unique
properties:

Troposphere (closest to Earth)

Stratosphere
Mesosphere
Thermosphere
Exosphere (farthest from Earth)

*The teacher will let the students watch

a video.

The Troposphere
*The teacher let the students read and give
their insights

The lowest and densest layer, containing

75% of the atmosphere's mass. Extends
up to 16 km at the equator and 8 km at the
poles. Temperature decreases with altitude
(around 6°C per kilometer). Where all
weather phenomena occur: clouds, rain,
wind, storms.

The Stratosphere

Located above the troposphere, extending

to about 50 km. Temperature generally *The students are listening
increases with altitude due to ozone
absorption of UV radiation. Contains the
ozone layer, a vital shield that filters
harmful ultraviolet (UV) radiation from the
sun.

The Mesosphere

The mesosphere lives up to its name – it's

the coldest layer of the atmosphere!
Temperatures plummet as we move
higher. Imagine it as a vast, chilly expanse.
This layer is also where meteors,
commonly known as shooting stars, meet
their fiery demise due to friction with gas
molecules. As they streak through the
mesosphere, they burn up, creating the
dazzling light show we witness from the
ground.

The Thermosphere

Located above the mesosphere, starting

around 80 km and extending to 600 km.
The hottest layer of the atmosphere, with
temperatures reaching over 2,000°C due
to solar radiation absorption by oxygen and
nitrogen molecules. (However, the
atmosphere is extremely thin here, so it
wouldn't actually feel hot to a human)

The Exosphere

The outermost layer of Earth's

atmosphere, starting around 600 km and
extending to thousands of kilometers.
Extremely thin layer, where particles are
very spread out and can travel long
distances before colliding. The boundary
between Earth's atmosphere and outer
space is not well-defined. Hydrogen and
helium are the most abundant gases due
to their light weight.

Any questions so far? Nothing ma’am

J. Recap
*The teacher starts to recap the
discussion by asking the students.

K. Abstraction
Alright, we are all set and now
imagine Earth without these distinct
atmospheric layers. How might life
on Earth be different if the
atmosphere was just one big layer
with uniform properties?

L. Application
Create a labeled drawing that
accurately depicts the following
layers of the Earth's atmosphere

M. Assessment
Direction: This assessment will test your
understanding of the layers of atmosphere.
Read each question carefully and answer
in complete and concise sentences.

Match the following terms with their

descriptions:

• Troposphere
• Stratosphere
• Mesosphere
• Thermosphere
• Exosphere

(Descriptions)

• Closest layer to Earth, contains

most weather
• Contains the ozone layer, protects
from UV rays
• Coldest layer, where meteors burn
up
• Hottest layer, temperature increases
with altitude
• Outermost layer, thinnest
atmosphere

Assignment

Research and study about the layers of

Earth

That ends our discussion, it’s a wrap!

Thank you and good bye class. Goodbye and thank you ma’am Rona.
