Touring New Zealand

By Liz Jacobs
Where is New Zealand?
Do you know New Zealand? Maybe you don’t, but nearly four million tourists go to New Zealand
every year! It is formed by two islands in the South Pacific Ocean. There are some glaciers, deserts,
forests and some beautiful beaches. Two great things to see in New Zealand are two of its national
parks.
North Island
Tongariro National Park is amazing. You walk up a small mountain with beautiful views. You then
walk through an old volcano called the Red Crater and see the Emerald Lakes. How many lakes are
there? There are three lakes and they are an incredible blue green colour.
Fascinating facts:
 There isn’t anywhere to buy food or water in the Tongariro National Park. There is natural water
but it is extremely hot! Take some snacks like pasta salad with you for energy.
 Mount Ngauruhoe in the Tongariro National Park is Mount Doom from The Lord of the Rings
film!

Abel Tasman National Park is a different kind of park. There are a lot of beaches in it and there are
some places to go swimming with seals! You can also get a kayak and go into the sea around the
coast. There are also a lot of cafés for when you are hungry. They sell hamburgers and sandwiches.
