Null Hypothesis, Alternate Hypothesis, Testing of Hypothesis: Types of Error, Level of Significance &
Critical Region, Test of Significance based on t-Distribution, F-Distribution and Chi square Test.

Q.1 Define-
i). Statistical Hypothesis
ii). Null Hypothesis and Alternative Hypothesis
iii). One tailed and two tailed test
iv). Type I and type II error
v). Significance level and critical region
vi). Confidence interval and confidence limits.

The demand for a particular spare part in a factory was found to vary from day to day. In a
Q.2
sample study the following information was obtained:
Days. Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
No. of parts 1124 1125 1110 1120 1126 1115
demanded
Test the hypothesis that the number of parts demanded does not depend on the day of week.
[Ans: 𝝌𝟐=0.1802; 𝝌𝟐𝟎.𝟎𝟓 = 11.070]

Q.3 The following table gives the number of aircraft accidents that occur during various days of the
week. Find whether the accidents are uniformly distributed over the week.
Days of week Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
No. of accidents 15 19 13 12 16 15
[Ans: 𝝌𝟐= 2; 𝝌𝟐𝟎.𝟎𝟓= 11.07]

Q.4 The heights of 10 adult males selected at random from a given locality had a mean of 158 cm
and variance 39.0625 cm. Test at 5% level of significance, the hypothesis that the adult males of the
given locality are on the average less than 162.5 cm tall.
[Ans: H0: µ=162.5; H1: µ<162.50 ; t= -2.2768]
A local telephone company claims that the average length of a phone call is 8 minutes. In a random
Q.5 sample of 18 phone calls, the sample mean was 7.8 minutes and the standard deviation was 0.5
minutes. Is there enough evidence to support this claim at  = 0.05?
[Ans: H0: µ=8; H1: µ≠8; t= -1.70]
A travel agency’s marketing brochure indicates that the standard deviations of hotel room rates for
Q.6 two cities are the same. A random sample of 13 hotel room rates in one city has a standard deviation
of $27.50 and a random sample of 16 hotel room rates in the other city has a standard deviation of
$29.75. Can you reject the agency’s claim at  = 0.01?
[Ans: 𝑯𝟎 : 𝝈𝟐𝟏 = 𝝈𝟐𝟐 ; 𝑯𝟏 : 𝝈𝟐𝟏 ≠ 𝝈𝟐𝟐 ; 𝑭 = 𝟏. 𝟏𝟕]

Q.7 Consider the following measurements of the heat produced by two mines:
Mine 1 8260 8130 8350 8070 8340
Mine 2 7950 7890 7900 8140 7920 7840
Can it be concluded that the two-population variance are equal?
[Ans: 𝑯𝟎 : 𝝈𝟐𝟏 = 𝝈𝟐𝟐 ; 𝑯𝟏 : 𝝈𝟐𝟏 ≠ 𝝈𝟐𝟐 ; 𝑭 = 𝟏. 𝟕𝟔]
Q.8 a) 200 teenagers are randomly selected and asked what their favorite pizza toppings. There results
are shown below. Find the observed frequencies and the expected frequencies.
Topping Results (n =200) % of teenagers
Cheese 78 41%
Pepperoni 52 25%
Sausage 30 15%
Mushrooms 25 10%
Onions 15 9%

b) A researcher claims that the distribution of favorite pizza toppings among teenagers is as
shown below. 200 randomly selected teenagers are surveyed.
Topping Frequency, f
Cheese 39%
Pepperoni 26%
Sausage 15%
Mushrooms 12.5%
Onions 7.5%

Using  = 0.01, and the observed and expected values previously calculated (from part a), test the
surveyor’s claim using a chi-square goodness-of-fit test.

[Ans: 𝝌𝟐 = 𝟐. 𝟎𝟐𝟓, There is not enough evidence at the 1% level to reject the surveyor’s
claim.]
Q.9 A manufacturer claims that its rechargeable batteries have an average life greater than 1,000
charges. A random sample of 10 batteries has a mean life of 1002 charges and a standard deviation
of 14. Is there enough evidence to support this claim at  = 0.01?

[Ans: 𝑯𝟎 ∶ 𝝁 ≤ 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎, 𝑯𝟏 : 𝝁 > 𝟏𝟎𝟎𝟎, 𝒕 ≈ 𝟎. 𝟒𝟓]

Q.10 The following results were obtained from two independent random samples:

Sample Size Sample mean Sum of square of deviation from mean

1 5 25 2.1

2 6 29 4.0

Test the two samples may be regarded as drawn from the same Normal population. (𝐹0.05, (5,4) = 6.26)

[Ans: 𝑯𝟎 ; 𝝈𝟐𝟏 = 𝝈𝟐𝟐 , 𝑯𝟏 : 𝝈𝟐𝟏 ≠ 𝝈𝟐𝟐 , 𝑭 = 𝟎. 𝟔𝟓𝟔𝟐𝟓]
