ENGI 2270 Probability and Statistics for Engineers Required 3
Prerequisites: Co- requisites: Schedule:
MATH 1350 N/A Two Two-hour lecture periods per
week
Course Description:
This course introduces the students to the basic concepts of probability and statistics and its application to the solution
of engineering problems. Principles of probability theory, discrete and continuous random variables, probability
distributions, hypothesis testing, correlation and simple linear regression concepts will be essential to identify, formulate
and solve engineering problems.
Textbook:
1. Douglas C. Montgomery & George Runger (2017), Applied Statistics and Probability for Engineers, 7th edition,
Wiley.

Scientists, 9th edition. Pearson. ISBN-10: 1292161361
Course learning objectives:
1. Calculate the number of outcomes in sample space of an experiment. (Understanding Level. SO 1)
2. Calculate and interpret the probabilities of events in discrete sample spaces.
3. Calculate measures of central tendency and variability and to construct a histogram. (Understanding Level. SO 1)
4. Apply discrete distributions (Binomial and Poisson) to the solution of engineering problems.
5. Apply continuous distributions (Normal and Exponential) to the solution of engineering problems.
6. State a hypothesis test for engineering problems.
7. Evaluate a hypothesis test for engineering experiments. (Evaluating Level. SO 1,6)
8. Calculate the parameter for a simple lineal regression. (Understanding Level. SO 1)
