Rules of Modifiers

Primary Discussion on Modifiers:


Definition of modifier: A word or a group of words that give(s)
additional information about another word is called modifier.
More Info: We use modifiers when we want to give extra information
about a noun. A noun can be modified by other words or phrases
placed before or after the noun. These words or phrases that modify
nouns are known as Modifiers.
Example:
Elvis Presley came from a poor family.
I saw the boy singing.
I know a man.
I know a very good man.
Ramification
Modifiers are of two kinds: i) Pre-modifiers
ii) Post-modifiers.
i) Pre-modifiers: Modifiers which are placed after determiners but
before the head of a noun or noun phrase are called pre-modifiers.
Example: a) She is a meritorious student.
b) We can hear the sound of running water.
c) These mangoes are green. Those mangoes are ripe.
ii) Post-modifiers: Modifiers that come after the noun head are called
Post-modifiers.
Example:
a) I found the problem solved.
b) Read the examples above and answer the questions below.
c) The authority here are very strict.
Different usages of modifiers:
1) Pre- modifier:(adjective)
2) Post modifier: (adverb)
3) Intensifier as modifier:(very, really, extremely, amazingly,
exceptionally, incredibly, remarkable, particularly, unusually,
enough.( These are also adverb)
4) Gerund as modifier: Swimming is my favorite hobby.
5) Participle as modifier:(present , past and perfect participle.)
6) Determiners as modifier:(a , an, the, another, both, certain, each,
either, enough, every, few, half, last, less, little, many, more,
most, much, neither, next, no, other, own, plenty, same, several,
some, such, that, those, this, whole etc.)
7) Quantifier as modifier: many, much, several, some, a lot of, few,
one, two, three, four, five etc.
8) Possessive as modifier: my, our, your, his, her, their, its etc.
9) Apposition as modifier:
Sakib Al Hasan, the best all rounder of the world.
Sheikh Hasina, the Prime Minister of Bangladesh.
Jute, the golden fibre of Bangladesh.
11) Noun Phrase as modifier: No passenger flight landed today.( If
two different noun sit beside, first noun modifies the second one. That
is why, first noun is used as an adjective.)
12) Noun- adjective as modifier: kamalapur is a busy railway
station.(If two different noun sit beside and before the first noun there
is an adjective, it is called noun adjective.)
13) Infinitive as modifier: He studied hard to pass the exam.
14) phrases as modifier:
Gerund: If we use ing after a verb and it works as a noun that is called
gerund.
Example: 1) Walking is a good exsercise.
2) Watching television is my favorite pastime.
Participle: If we use ing after a verb and it works like an adjective that is
called participle.
There are three participles:
a) Present Participle: The birds flying in the sky look very beautiful.
b) Past Participle: Rina found the glass broken.
It is a damaged road.
c) Perfect Participle: Having finished his homework, he went outside.
