Engage

So, what do you think is the difference between

facts and opinion?

“Students share their ideas.”

Okay, very good class.

Facts and opinions are often uttered in the same

breath; the terms have a huge difference in their
meanings. Whether a statement is a fact, or an
opinion depends on the validity of the statement.
While a fact refers to the something true or real,
which is backed by evidence, documentation, etc.
On the other hand, opinion is what a person
believes or thinks about something.
• The fact is described as the statement that
can be verified or proved to be true.
Opinion is an expression of judgment or
belief about something.
• Fact relies on observation or research
while opinion is based on assumption.
• Facts explain what actually happened.
Unlike an opinion, that represents a
perception about something.
• One important feature of the fact is that it
is universal and does not differ from
person to person. As against this, every
human being has a different opinion on a
particular subject and so, it varies from one
person to another.
• Facts can change anybody’s opinion, but
vice versa is not possible.
• Facts are real information and so it cannot
be challenged or debated, but if we talk
about opinions, they can be debated.

Here are some examples of facts and opinion.

Facts

“You need oxygen to survive.”

There's an easy way to prove this fact right: if you

hold your breath, what happens? When you can't
breathe, your heart has no oxygenated blood to
pump, and your brain cells begin to die. Depriving
a living thing of oxygen results in its death.

“Valentines Day is on February 14th.”

Look at your nearest calendar. What's marked for

February 14th? Valentine's Day, the holiday that
celebrates love and romance, is likely written into
that square. If verifying the information on your
calendar isn't enough, try looking up the history of
the holiday.

“Women are given the right to vote in 1920.”

Voting rights are another area where people have

a lot of opinions. But no one can argue with the
existence of the 19th Amendment in the United
States Constitution. It was ratified in 1920, giving
women the right to vote.

Opinion

“We should use an ocean water for drinking.”

This opinion would make a great topic for an

argument essay, but in the end, it's someone's
personal opinion. They can use lots of evidence to
back up this idea, including the value of
desalinating water to make it suitable for drinking.
However, it's still not a verifiable fact.

“The cake tastes delicious.”

“Liza Soberano is more beautiful than Janella

Salvador.”

“It is better to live in Singapore than in Japan.”

Did you understand what our topic for today is all

about?

“Yes, sir”
Explore

Okay, that’s good to know then.

Let’s now have our group activity.

Group yourself into 5 groups, since you are all 25

you have 5 members each. Your task is to provide
a 10 fact and opinion examples and give a brief
explanation on why it is considered a fact or
opinion.

Explain

While doing your task, ill be asking you some

questions regarding our discussion.

What is opinion again?

How does fact become fact?

The students will share what they have learned.
What are the sources you need to verify the
statements is a fact or opinion?
Does opinion base on someone’s perspective?

Elaborate

Each student will be explaining the task that is

given to them.
They are able to differentiate the facts and
opinion.
They will ba able to provide the explanation that
connects to the topic that has been discussed. The students will present what they have done in
their activity.

Expand

A fact is a specific detail that is true based on

objective proof. A fact is discovered.

An opinion is an interpretation, value judgment, or

belief that cannot be proved or disproved. An
opinion is created. Objective proof can be physical
evidence, an eyewitness account, or the result of
an accepted scientific method. Most people’s
points of view and beliefs are based on a blend of
fact and opinion.

The fact is something, that has actually taken

place or known to have existed, which can be
validated with pieces of evidence. They are
strictly defined, and can be measured, observed
and proven. It refers to something that makes
statements true and used in connection with
research and study.

A fact can be an event or information, based on

real occurrences which can be tested through
verifiability, i.e. they are supported by proofs,
statistics, documentation, etc. Therefore, a fact is
nothing but a verifiable truth or reality which are
agreed upon by consensus of people.

The term ‘opinion’ is defined as the personal view

or judgment about a subject, that may or may not
be substantiated by the facts or positive
knowledge. In other words, an opinion is an
inconclusive statement, used in subjective matters,
which cannot be proved true or false. It is what a
person thinks or feels about something or
someone. Hence it is not a true but biased
information.

Opinion is highly influenced by a person’s

feelings, thoughts, perspective, desires, attitude,
experiences, understanding, beliefs, values, etc.,
which cannot be tested by concrete evidence.
Therefore, due to individual differences, every
person’s opinion on a particular matter is also
different.

Are there any questions regarding our topic? None, sir.

Evaluate

Okay, lets now have our short quiz.

Short quiz about facts and opinion.
