SOLVING FOR
UNGROUPED
DATA

MEASURES OF POSITIONS FOR UNGROUPED

DATA
UNGROUPED DATA
 The data is raw, and are not sorted into categories
 Ungrouped data is the first data you gather from an experiment or
study.
QUARTILES:
 The score points which divide a distribution into four
equal parts. 25% the distribution fall below the first quartile, 50% fall
below the second quartile, and 75% fall below the third quartile.
 To find Quartile 1, 2 and 3 denoted by Q1, Q2 and Q3
we use the formula:
1
Q 1= (n+1)
4
= round up
2 1
Q 2=
4
or 2
( n+1 ) = round off

5
3
Q 3= ( n+1 )= round down
4

DECILES:
 Are the nine score points which divide the distribution
into ten equal parts.
 Deciles are denoted as D1, D2, D3, D4…. D9.
k
 The formula used is Dk=
10
(n+1), where k is the decile

number, and n is the total number of data.

PERCENTILES:
 Are the ninety – nine score points which divide the
distribution into one hundred equal parts, so that each part represents
the data set.
k
 To find the percentile position, we use the formula: Pk=
100
(n+1)

and then rounded off to the nearest integer.

MEASURES OF POSITION FOR GROUPED DATA

GROUPED DATA
 are data that have been grouped together, and arranged in
categories.
where:

LB = Lower Boundary
13
k = nth position

f = frequency

i = size of the class interval

n = total number of data

cfb = cumulative frequency of the class

QUARTILES:
 The score points that divide the distribution into four equal parts.
 To find the position of quartiles, we use the formula;
kn
Qk=

Where “k” is the position, and “n” is the total number of data.
 To find the quartiles for Grouped data; we use the formula;

[ ]
kn
−cfb
4
Qk=LB+ i
f

DECILES:
 are those values that divide the total frequency into 10 equal parts.
 The kth decile denoted by Dk is computed as follows:

[ ]
kn
−cfb
Dk =LB+ 10 i
f

PERCENTILES:
 Finding percentiles of a grouped data is similar to that of finding
quartiles and deciles of a grouped data.
 The kth percentile, denoted by Pk is computed as follow:

[ ]
kn
−cfb
Pk =LB+ 100 i
