Lab Experiment 2

The document describes an experiment to measure the reactions of a simply supported beam under different loading conditions and verify the principle of superposition. The experiment involves applying loads at different positions on the beam individually and together, and recording the support reactions.

Experiment No. 2
Reactions of a Simply Supported Beam (Superposition)

Objective: To measure the reactions to a simply supported beam and verify the principle
of superposition

Apparatus: One meter long beam simply supported on load cells with knife edge supports.

Phase 1 - Loads applied at 500mm Phase 2 – Loads applied at 650mm

Load P1 Load P2

R1 R2 R1 R2

Phase 3 Load at 800mm Phase 4 – All loads applied, (at 500mm; 650mm; and, 800mm)

Load P3 P1 P2 P3

R1 R2 R1 R2

Procedure:
1. Place a series of increasing weights (5, 10, 15, 20, 25N) at the centre of
the beam and record the support reactions.

2. Place a similar series of increasing weights 650mm from one support and
record the support reactions.

3. Place a similar series of increasing weights 800mm from one support and
record the support reactions.

4. Place a similar series of increasing weights (2, 5, 7, 10 N) at 500, 650 and

800mm from one support and record the support reactions.

5. Plot graphs of support reactions verses applied weight for each of the four
loading cases.

6. By comparing the effect of load case 4 on its own and the effect of load
cases 1, 2 and 3 combined, verify the principle of superposition.
