SOCIAL NETWORK ADDICTION

In this day and age social networking has taken over the lives of many people,
especially young people. It is now very easy to find electronic devices such as Smart
Phones that provide many ways to use them quickly such as listening to music,
capturing images, video calls, chatting, games. These social networks allow their users
to be connected in a fast and real time way, which facilitates communication. The
problem is when it gets out of control and you can't control the use of time and often
prefer to talk to people through the networks rather than in person.

Social networks are sites and applications that operate at various levels, enabling the
exchange of information between people and/or companies.

When we talk about social networking, what comes to mind first of all are sites like
Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn, or applications such as TikTok and Instagram that allow
communication in a fast and effective way. Many young people don't know how to live
without being connected, sharing their lives on social media or simply consuming content
that can often end up being harmful. For example, not giving attention to more important
things can lead to dependency, anxiety problems or depression.

Some advantages of social networking:

ADVANTAGES:

1) They can be used for studies, exchange of ideas or research.

2) Entrepreneurs sell their products through the networks.
3) Group work without the need to move to a location.
4) Allows the exchange of information, activities, interests, hobbies.

1
DISADVANTAGES:

1) Abuse of privacy, this has led many young people to become depressed and even
suicidal

2) Can become addictive

3) Access to content unsuitable for young people

4) People often give wrong information in order to do harm.

5) Young people are very vulnerable to having their lives revolve around approval
through the networks and because of their desire to be accepted, they can often access
bad things.

Studies on this subject show that young people who sometimes feel lonely or depressed
turn to social networks and take it as a painkiller for their illness, creating a stronger and
more constant need to spend a lot of time on them.

A recent study by the Chicago Booth School of Business claims that Facebook, Twitter
and other platforms are more addictive than tobacco or alcohol. According to the study,
accessing social media is easier than obtaining cigarettes or alcohol, and resisting this
new addiction is even harder.

Cecilie Schou Andreassen, a doctor of psychology, says that the characteristics of a

social media addict are very similar to those of an alcoholic or drug addict.

How do I know if I am having problems with social media addiction?

SYMPTOMS:

1.- If I don't have an electronic device with me, I don't know what to do.

2.- Check social networks more than 15 times a day.

3.- You feel bad if you don't get the amount of likes you want.

4.- You can't spend or go on a trip without your electronic devices.

2
5.- Your friends are more virtual than real.

6.- you check your mobile phone as soon as you wake up

8.- when you go to bed the last thing you do is check your apps.

What is social media addiction? Social media addiction is a behavioral disorder

characterized by a compulsive and uncontrollable need to be connected to social media,
leading to a loss of control and significant interference in a person's daily life. Social
media addiction also is defined by being overly concerned about social media, driven by
an uncontrollable urge to log on to or use social media, and devoting so much time and
effort to social media that it impairs other important life areas.

CONSEQUENCES:

Some of these are withdrawal from interpersonal and real life interactions, eye damage,
hearing damage, sleep problems.

Jodi Mindell of the Sleep Center at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia, in the
United States (USA), established that between 20 and 25 percent of young people have
some kind of sleep disorder.

Other consequences include:

. Distractions
. Social networking has a negative impact on cognitive skills.
. Affect on health .
. Anti social people
. Extreme users avoid face to face interaction or if they have it they do not do it
in a natural way.
. Young people start to stop doing their school work.
. They become anxious if they spend long hours away from the computer.
SOLUTIONS:
3
1. Recognize the signs of social media addiction.
2. Set a time and place for social networking.
3. Limit your time on social media to specific activities and avoid falling into the trap
of not knowing what you are looking for, being kind of lost.
4. Cultivate hobbies and relationships outside of social media.
5. Practice self-reflection and self care.

6. CONCLUSIONS

Social networks are created to provide greater contact between friends and
information management. They are very helpful, of daily use and practically
necessary. As they are a good tool, they have become part of our lives and for
this reason, if we abuse their use, we will have very negative effects. Young
people are the most vulnerable to the improper use of them, as they are not able
to set limits on their use and it gradually turns into an addiction.

Social networks are very useful and important tools that have marked the way in
which people live together, facilitating integration over distances and time.
The problem with social networks is the abuse that users can give them,
especially young people who, due to family, work or student problems, take
refuge in this medium as a mechanism of acceptance.

The most common problems of addiction to social networks are isolation and
lack of attention to important situations.

To solve the problem, you must recognize that there is a problem, you believe
that, if you have an addiction but that you can get out of it, little by little go out
into the real world and give importance to the things that you left aside because
of the networks.
