Math 122 – Elementary Differential Equations

2nd Semester AY 2021-2022

COURSE SYLLABUS

COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course introduces ordinary differential equations and the different techniques on how to
solve these equations. This subject also includes methods on how to solve initial value
problems by Laplace transforms and methods in finding solutions of systems of linear
differential equations.

COURSE CREDIT 3 units

PREREQUISITE Math 22/equivalent or Math 30/equivalent

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, the student should be able to:

1. give the basic definitions for differential equations;

2. identify and apply techniques of solving first-order differential equations;
3. use different methods in finding the solution of second-order differential equations;
4. determine the solution of higher-order differential equations;
5. solve differential equations using Laplace transforms;
6. find the solution of linear systems of differential equations; and
7. solve real-world problems modeled by ordinary differential equations.

MODE OF DELIVERY

The course will be delivered mostly synchronously. Asynchronous meetings will be announced
via UVLE or via email. The necessary materials will be uploaded in UVLe or will be sent to
you individually through your given email addresses. Also, you will be sent emails and/or text
messages regularly, to check up on you, collect feedbacks, and to give you updated materials
or some announcements, should there be any.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS

The requirements for this course are problem sets and assignments with the following weights:

3 Problem Sets, each is one-third of the final grade

In the problem sets, you may be asked to prove some properties and compute or solve problems
using the techniques you learned from the lessons.

All course requirements must be completed on or before the end of the semester unless an
earlier deadline is given. Students with complete requirements by the end of the semester
shall be given a final grade (numerical or DRP) according to the transmutation table. Students
with incomplete requirements shall be given INC or DRP in accordance with the notes below.
