Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the English 10 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM): Celebrating Diversity
through World Literature!

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

To the parents:
As parents, you play a vital role in educating your child’s life; hence, you may also
help provide the support and stimuli that your child needs to make sense of the world. Since
we are currently facing the coronavirus pandemic, now is the perfect time for you to make
your home a school and act as a teacher to your child.

For the learner:

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process
the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

The module is divided into four lessons:

● Lesson 1 – Correct Grammar in Writing Definition
● Lesson 2 – Types of an Informal Definition
● Lesson 3 – Research Paper Report
● Lesson 4 – Construct Research Paper Outline

In this module, you are expected to:

• Write formal definitions correctly.
• Identify the types of an informal definition.
• Identify the components of a research report/paper.
• Construct an outline for a research report/paper.

Lesson Correct Grammar in Writing
1 Definition

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

Standard or formal definition gives a brief, explicit, precise and objective dictionary
meaning of a term. Such a definition consists of three parts:
➢ The term itself.
➢ The class to which the term belongs.
➢ The characteristics that distinguish the term from all others in its class.

After this lesson, you are expected to:

1. Identify the parts of a formal definition.
2. Write formal definitions correctly.

WHAT IS IT
You could use a logical pattern when giving a formal definition. This pattern
has three parts, as follows:

Specie This refers to the word or phrase being defined.

Genus This refers to the class or general category to which the word or phrase
being defined belongs.

Differentia This refers to the characteristics that make the word or phrase being
defined different from the other words or phrases of the same class.

Study this example:

A formicarium is an artificial nest

specie genus
designed primarily for the study of ant colonies and how ants behave.
differentia

3
WHAT’S MORE

When doing a formal definition, take note of the following reminders:

1. The genus must be as narrow as possible to give a clearer definition.

2. The part of speech used in the specie must be the same with that of the genus.
3. Do not use in the genus any word or word form from the specie.
4. Do not use in the differentia any word or word form from the specie.
5. Do not use in the differentia any word or word form from the specie.
6. Provide sufficient information in the genus and differentia.

Task 1. Directions: Identify the parts of a formal definition using the table below.

1. Submarine is a seagoing vessel that operates underwater.

2. Twitter is a social media consisting of micro-blogging in 140 characters.

3. Insanity is a mental condition in which a defendant does not know right from wrong.

4. Alternator is an electric generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy in

the form of alternating current.

5. Facebook is a social media consisting of a free-access social networking website operated

and privately owned by Facebook, Inc.

Lesson Types of an Informal
2 Definition

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

In composition, informal style is a broad term for speech or writing marked by a

casual, familiar, and generally colloquial use of language. An informal
writing style is often more direct than a formal style and may rely more heavily on contractions,
abbreviations, short sentences, and ellipses.

After this lesson, you are expected to:

1. Identify the types of an informal definition.
2. Write informal definitions correctly.

WHAT IS IT

In an informal definition, the writer uses known words or examples to explain an

unknown term. These definitions may be synonyms or antonyms introduced by or, in other words,
or like. It could also be stipulation, analogy, or illustration.
There are also instances when you restate an unfamiliar word or expression to make its
meaning clearer. Although the definition is not as comprehensive as the formal one, the unknown
term becomes more understandable to the reader. You could clarify what you mean by an unfamiliar
term by using signal words such as that is, in other words, or or; and, using punctuations such as
commas, quotation marks, parentheses, or dashes. Study the following examples.

Example:
• Freedom, also referred to as liberty or independence, is a state people reach when they are
free to think and do whatever they please.
• Many prisoners of war have been victims of cruel and unusual punishment; people were
shocked and horrified when they learned of the water torture, temperature extremes, and
sensory overloads that the prisoners were subjected to.

8
WHAT’S MORE

Task 1. Directions:
A. Encircle the signal words used in restating the meaning of the unfamiliar word in
each sentence.
1. Scientists study coprolites; that is, fossilized feces, to figure out what and how much ancient
animals ate.

2. If an animal poops in the right place, its feces can be quickly buried and become coprolites.
In other words, these fossilized feces are turned into rocks by minerals.

3. A coprolite, or fossilized feces, from a meat-eating dinosaur showed it was a real bone-
crusher.

B. Identify the punctuation used as a clue in restating the meaning of the unfamiliar word
in each sentence. Write your answer on the space provided.

______________1. The pterosaur, any of various extinct flying reptiles of the order Pterosauria, lived
245 million years ago to 65 million years ago.

______________2. The DNA (short for deoxyribonucleic acid) is built on a backbone of phosphorus,
oxygen, and carbon atoms.

______________3. The genus Canis — which is Latin for dog — includes all domestic breeds of dog
and their closest wild relatives, including wolves and coyotes.

______________4. When triclosan [a germ-killing chemical added to some common products such
as hand soaps and sponges] ends up in streams, it can harm tiny water fleas that
feed fish and other aquatic critters.

______________5. The “CT” in a CT scan stands for “computed tomography” that doctors and
scientists can use to look inside something, without having to cut it.

WHAT I CAN DO

Task 1. Directions: Give the informal definition of the following terms by using synonyms with
appropriate signal words. Be guided by the given example.
1. Unfamiliar term: animosity
Synonym: hatred
Signal word: or
Sentence: His animosity, or hatred, of his sister divided the family.

Signal word: ___________________
Sentence: ____________________________________________________

5. Unfamiliar term: manumit

Synonym: ___________________

Task 2. Directions: Give the informal definition of the following terms by using punctuations as
signals. Be guided by the given example.

Synonym: cabbage
Punctuation: dash
Sentence: In our farm, my father grows kohlrabi—a type of cabbage.

Lesson Research Paper Report
3

WHAT I NEED TO KNOW

A research paper is an essay in which you explain what you have learned
after exploring your topic in depth. In a research paper, you include information from sources such
as books, articles, interviews, and Internet sites. You also use your own ideas, knowledge, and
opinions.

WHAT IS IT

After this lesson, you are expected to:

1. Identify the components of a research report/paper.

2. Show understanding of the components of a research report/paper.

Your paper should focus on a central issue that interests you. Limit your topic so that you can
cover it in a paper of the assigned length. Organize the paper around the points that are most
important in your opinion. State your main ideas in your own words and use information from your
sources to support them. Incorporate ideas and facts from your sources by paraphrasing and
summarizing. Write the ideas in your own way, using different words and sentence structures and
leaving out unnecessary details.

Use quotations when the author's words are especially well chosen or memorable. When you
quote even a short phrase, copy the exact words, enclose them in quotation marks, and cite the
name of the author or speaker. When you give facts, paraphrase and summarize ideas, or quote
someone else's words, you must document your sources. As a rule, anything that is not common
knowledge must be cited. The purpose of documentation is to give credit to the author and to allow
your readers to look up your sources. Your paper is stronger because you can prove that the
information came from reliable sources.

11
