4. 4. What happens at the synapse between two neurons? Explain with diagram. 2
Transmission of nerve impulses between two neurons takes place through the syn-
apse. At the end of the axon, the electrical impulse sets off the release of some
chemicals (neurotransmitters). These chemicals cross the gap or synapse and
start a similar electrical impulse in the dendrite of the next neuron.
5.5. Male has 23 pairs of chromosomes and female has 23 pairs of chromosomes. Then 2
why don’t an offspring have 46 pairs of chromosomes which is obtained by the fusion
of these two eggs.
Male individual has 23 pairs of chromosomes but the gamete that is formed by the
meiotic cell division contain only half the number of chromosomes i.e. 23 chromo-
somes in male sperm and 23 chromosomes in female egg. It is the fusion of this
sperm and egg which leads to an offspring with 23 pairs of chromosomes.
In the four-chambered heart, the left half is completely separated from right half by ½
septa.
This prevents oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from mixing. ½
This allows a highly efficient supply of oxygenated blood to all parts of the body. ½
This is useful in animals that have high energy needs, such as birds and mammals. ½

8. 7. Green and red coloured seeds are recessive and dominant trait respectively. Out of 3
F1 and F2 in which generation will the green seed appear, if both parents are not hy-
brid.
Since it is given that green is recessive and red seeds are dominant, hence green
colour of seeds will reappear only in F2 generation This is because, both parents
are not hybrid for this trait, (as given) and hence the two recessive genes will come
together only in F2.

10 a) What are cranial and spinal nerves?
. b) Name the hormone secreted by thyroid gland and specify one function of it.
c) Name two involuntary actions controlled by hind brain.
a) Cranial nerves are those that emerge directly from the brain. Spinal nerves are those that
emerge directly from segments of the spinal cord. Cranial nerve transfers information 1
between the brain and the other parts of the body. Cranial nerves arise from the brain.
They may be sensory, motor or both.
b) Thyroxine is the hormone secreted by the thyroid gland. This hormone regulates the
metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. By regulating the metabolism it helps in 1
optimum growth and development of the body.
c) Involuntary actions like salivation, vomiting, blood pressure is controlled by the 1
medulla in the hindbrain.
