ENTRANC EXAMINATION (2022-23)

SUBJECT- BIOLOGY (Marking Scheme)

Name: ___________ Class: XI: _________ Max. Marks: 25

1. 1. Which of the following is totally impossible outcome of Mendel’s Experiment? 1

a. 3 tall 1 short plant
b. 24 tall and 8 short plants
c. 8 tall and 0 short plants
d. 4 tall plants and 1 medium height plant.
2. 2. The functional unit of environment is 1
a. Ecosystem
b. Nitrogen
c. Carbon
d. Oxygen
3. 3. Photosynthesis is a 1
a. Catabolic process
b. Parabolic process
c. Amphibolic process
d. Photochemical process

4. 4. What happens at the synapse between two neurons? Explain with diagram. 2
Transmission of nerve impulses between two neurons takes place through the syn-
apse. At the end of the axon, the electrical impulse sets off the release of some
chemicals (neurotransmitters). These chemicals cross the gap or synapse and
start a similar electrical impulse in the dendrite of the next neuron.

5.5. Male has 23 pairs of chromosomes and female has 23 pairs of chromosomes. Then 2
why don’t an offspring have 46 pairs of chromosomes which is obtained by the fusion
of these two eggs.
Male individual has 23 pairs of chromosomes but the gamete that is formed by the
meiotic cell division contain only half the number of chromosomes i.e. 23 chromo-
somes in male sperm and 23 chromosomes in female egg. It is the fusion of this
sperm and egg which leads to an offspring with 23 pairs of chromosomes.

6. 6. What is the advantage of a four chambered heart?

In the four-chambered heart, the left half is completely separated from right half by ½
septa.
This prevents oxygenated and deoxygenated blood from mixing. ½
This allows a highly efficient supply of oxygenated blood to all parts of the body. ½
This is useful in animals that have high energy needs, such as birds and mammals. ½

8. 7. Green and red coloured seeds are recessive and dominant trait respectively. Out of 3
F1 and F2 in which generation will the green seed appear, if both parents are not hy-
brid.
Since it is given that green is recessive and red seeds are dominant, hence green
colour of seeds will reappear only in F2 generation This is because, both parents
are not hybrid for this trait, (as given) and hence the two recessive genes will come
together only in F2.

9. 8. (a) With the help of diagrams explain process of budding in Hydra. 3

b) Explain the schematic representation of gaseous exchange in tissues.

10 a) What are cranial and spinal nerves?
. b) Name the hormone secreted by thyroid gland and specify one function of it.
c) Name two involuntary actions controlled by hind brain.

a) Cranial nerves are those that emerge directly from the brain. Spinal nerves are those that
emerge directly from segments of the spinal cord. Cranial nerve transfers information 1
between the brain and the other parts of the body. Cranial nerves arise from the brain.
They may be sensory, motor or both.
b) Thyroxine is the hormone secreted by the thyroid gland. This hormone regulates the
metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. By regulating the metabolism it helps in 1
optimum growth and development of the body.
c) Involuntary actions like salivation, vomiting, blood pressure is controlled by the 1
medulla in the hindbrain.

10.11. a) Why is the small intestine in herbivores larger than in carnivores?

b) Compare the functioning of alveoli in the lungs and nephrons in the kidneys
with respect to their structures and functioning?
a) The small intestine is longer in herbivores than in carnivores because herbivores
consume plant and grass-based food which is high in cellulose and the digestion of 1½
cellulose takes a long time. The length of the small intestine differs in various an-
imals depending on the food that they eat.
b) The comparison of Alveoli in the lungs and Nephrons in the kidneys are as follows. Alve-
oli in the lungs are the tiny air sacs that are located in the lungs that help in the rapid ex- 1½
change of gases. Nephrons in the kidneys consist of glomerulus and tubules through which
glomerular filtrate passes.

11. 12. Read the following passage and answer the questions given below

Respiration is an energy releasing enzymatically controlled process. It involves a

stepwise breakdown of food substances inside living cells. The energy released
during cellular respiration is immediately used to synthesize a molecule called ATP,
which is used to fuel all. other activities of the cell. In these processes ATP is broken
down, to release a fixed amount of energy which can drive the endothermic reactions
taking place in the cell.

a) The respiratory substrate within the cells is: 1

i. Glucose
ii. Starch
iii. Cellulose
iv. Lactic acid

c) Identify the incorrect statement

(i) Breathing rate of aquatic animals is higher than terrestrial animals
(ii) Lime water turns milky due to the presence of moisture in the air exhaled by us 1
(iii) During the day carbon dioxide generated by respiration is used up for
photosynthesis, hence there is no CO2 release.
iv. The air passing through nostrils is filtered by fine hairs that line the passage.

c) Make a graphic organizer to show the breakdown of glucose by various pathways.
