Who am I? Why Am I this way? Why do I make certain choices? Can I change? Many
people would ask these questions to themselves. They would try to internalize and
begin to answer based from the things that would grasp into their mind. Some would
start from simple things until they would come to the point thinking of complex things
and everything becomes dubitable as Rene Descartes says in his Universal Methodic
Doubt. Answering the simple questions above are not that easy. Though it is not that
easy, there is still an answer. No, many answers rather. In my own point of view,
internalization, experience, etc. are some factors that would lead a person to be in a
critical state of mind, thus leading him in answering the simple question: Who am I?

This course is intended to facilitate the exploration of the issues and concerns regarding
self and identity to arrive at a better understanding of one ’s self. It strives to meet this
goal by stressing the integration of the personal with the academic-contextualizing the
matters discussed in the classroom and in the everyday experiences of students-
making for better learning, generating a new appreciation for the learning process, and
developing a more critical and reflective attitude while enabling them to manage and
improve their selves to attain a better quality of life.
The course is divided into three major parts. The first part seeks to understand the
construct of the self from various disciplinal perspectives: philosophy, sociology,
anthropology, and psychology – as well the more traditional division between the East
and West- each seeking to provide answers to the difficult but essential question of
“What is the self”? And raising, among others, the question. ”Is there even such a
construct as the self?”
The second part explores some of the various aspects that make up the self, such as
the biological and material up to and including the more recent Digital Self. The third
and final part identifies three areas of concern for young students: learning, goal setting,
and managing stress. It also provides for the more practical application of the concepts
discussed in this course and enables them the hands-on experience of developing self-
help plans for self-regulated learning, goal setting and self-care.
This course includes the mandatory topics on Family Planning and Population
Education.

Holistic Development for Students: Meaning and Importance
-Maria Montessori
What Maria Montessori said in the early part of the last century is more relevant today
in the 21st century because academic excellence alone can no longer assure success
and happiness in life and career. Holistic Development through education from the early
stage of a child’s life has become more important today than in the last century.
Every child is unique. He or she has her unique personality traits, interests, preferences,
values, attitudes, strengths, and weaknesses. The educational curriculum must be able
to help every child find his or her unique place in the world in alignment with the
uniqueness that he or she has. In order to achieve this, the holistic development of a
child is of utmost importance.
Studies have shown that through playful learning experiences, students can acquire
broad, dynamic and interconnected skills rapidly and effectively.
The aim of teachers and counsellors in holistic growth is o chart out every
student’s individual capabilities and compare their abilities to the norms of a
student their age.
A comparative analysis and its results along with relevant readings are used to explain
how the traits of the child and aspects of his/her environment may interact to influence
his/her growth and development.
Holistic development of students seeks to address many factors such as the physical,
emotional, spiritual, relational and intellectual aspects. The importance of the holistic
approach lies in the fact that it is the children who learn different skills in a stage- wise
manner, including walking, running, talking, fine motor skills, etc.
Gone are the days when parents used to spend their entire day with their child. With the
way technology is advancing and education methods changing, the parents are now
interested in making their children more engaged and involved in almost all facets of
learning. Holistic development meaning has attained a lot of importance in parenting.
In the context of Holistic Development and Wellness wheel a framework was developed
with the hope that our young adolescence will equip themselves of the right knowledge,
skills and wisdom and strong faith and values from this University geared towards
personal and professional development. As soon as they stepped out of the school it is
with fervent hope that they will also be a useful member of the community and later a
leader of this country that will truly be an honor and pride of our Almighty God.
