Intervention Assignment.2023
Intervention Assignment.2023
Directions
The following pages guide you on each step of this assignment. You will look for
intervention resources on web sites, class readings, class notes and peer reviewed
journals (Research Notes 1-3). You will pull it all together and create an evidence-
based intervention plan based on your findings (Pulling it All Together) and include
references cited using APA format. You may type directly on these pages, but it is not
required. I put the assignment in boxes to make it easier to follow but it may be
easier for you to create a word document with all the assignment components.
Intervention Assignment
NAME: Kaleb Mayes #1 Intervention Website Review- 10 pts.
Briefly describe: Your health topic, the affected population, the geographic location, and the primary location
of the intervention efforts (e.g., health care setting, school, campus, work site, community, etc.)
My topic is on college students using social support for mental health. The affected population is on campus
college students. The primary location of the intervention efforts is located at the University of Idaho, Moscow
campus.
Review a website with intervention strategies related to your topic. Only 1 is required, recommend you look at
more than one for greater learning. The site must contain intervention strategies. For example: Associations,
organizations, public health sites, etc. CDC and SAMSHA cites offer strategy examples.
Website Name and Link:
Live Well: Mental well-being
https://www.uidaho.edu/current-students/vandal-health-education/live-well/mental
This website shows a lot of information regarding mental health. It has links going over different areas where
anyone seeking mental health help can go to receive help or ways for others to get involved with the community
and be a helpful source for others. The website also goes over the events that are held to help improve mental
health such as therapy dog day, or laughter yoga. The site also shows locations on campus that people can go to
if they need a safe space or someone to talk to. The population addressed is focused on, on campus students
since that is where the majority of students are located. The website also addressed faculty and staff inviting
them to learn how to watch for signs on mental health crisis’.
What did you learn about effective interventions for your topic? Answer the questions below and add
additional comments.
What intervention tools and resources are available? What are the top recommended interventions? Is there an
evidence base for the recommended interventions? (Make sure the website is useful to your topic).
Educational activities / Behavior modification activities – The website has a weekly schedule that shows the
events around campus that can promote good mental health. These activities include Laughter yoga, Therapy
animals, and advocacy days.
Community advocacy – The website has a link to the counseling and mental health center on campus and also a
mental health first aid program that faculty, staff and students can sign up for. Through this program, those that
sign up can learn about the signs of mental illness.
Environmental Changes – The website can connect those individuals seeking safe spaces, with areas of refuge
around campus. The well space shown can help connect students with peers that can help them find
information, or can be used as a study zone, or as a de-stress zone.
Communication and Marketing – The Live Well – Mental health site has a connection to the Universities
“Connecting U & I” campaign. This campaign connects individuals to mental health resources, connection
resources such as on campus support and off campus support.
Critical thinking and relation to your health promotion topic
What did you learn from the website that you can apply to your project? Organize by answering # 1-3 below:
1) Intervention activities that are appropriate for your project, 2) Useful tools and resources, including health
education/promotion resources; 3) Other resources- give web links for at least two other helpful resources the
web page directed you to and write 1-2 sentences about what you found helpful about each site.
This website has a few areas that can assist my project. Behavior modification activities and educational
activities are two of the main resources I plan on using. Social support is extremely important for college
students, and one of the easiest ways to gain social support is attending activities or groups that align with
individual interests or needs. This site gives dates and times about many upcoming events that can help those
experiencing mental turmoil. Things like laughter yoga, therapy dogs, and much more.

This links us to another site about how we can develop ourselves to be mental health first responders. Much like
someone would be trained in CPR, they can also be trained in mental health issues. The site provides information
on how anyone can understand the signs of mental health distress.

This link leads us to many more resources that the School has compiled such as mental health resources,
connection resources, and relationship resources. Each of these resources either informs the viewer on where
they can locate direct help, or gives them general information on health issues
1. Read the Spectrum of Prevention- from the Prevention Institute-what levels (at least 2) of prevention
are most important for your topic/population/ and location? The type/level of change desired will direct
you to types of interventions that will have the most impact.
I feel the two most important level of prevention for college mental health is level 1: strengthening individual
knowledge and skills and level 2: Promoting Community Education.
2. Discuss what you learned about the predisposing, enabling, and reinforcing factors from your project
assessment are most related to the health behaviors most in need of change for your project? Cite
literature to support your answer. (It’s fine to use a citation from the assessment)
#3 RESEARCH ARTICLES– PEER REVEIWED- 1 of 3
3 peer reviewed research articles that describe interventions are required. Use original research, not
review articles or websites. Do not include assessment literature. 15 pt. each 45-pt. total
APA Citation of article
Chaló, P., Pereira, A., Batista, P., & Sancho, L. (2017). Brief biofeedback intervention on anxious freshman
university students. Applied Psychophysiology and Biofeedback, 42(3), 163–168.

Briefly describe the intervention – what did they do? What was unique or most interesting to you?
If a health behavior theory was identified, briefly discuss which one was used and how it shaped the
intervention?
What were the main conclusions about the interventions reached by the author(s) and what were the
limitations of the interventions? (Most peer reviewed papers will cite the limitations of the findings).
What did you learn from this research/intervention that can be applied to you project?
What would you need to do to adapt the intervention to fit your population and why?

1. What level of prevention is the focus of your intervention: primary, secondary, or tertiary?
Are the intervention efforts focused on: individuals (one to one), groups, community, population (policy,
systems, environments, information campaigns, or street/direct action/advocacy?
Example: For the topic of Breast Cancer, my project will focus on secondary prevention (screening) and the focus is
on reaching individuals in a health care setting and reaching community members via an information campaign.
2. Intervention Types and Strategies – 3 intervention types and strategies- 10 pt. each- 30 pts.
Review the ppt. presentation/lecture: Health Promotion Planning and Interventions. We discussed multiple
types of interventions: Communication & marketing; Educational activities (includes disease self-
management); Behavior modification activities; Regulatory Activities- laws, policies, ordinances; Health status
evaluations/assessment; Community advocacy; Coalition building; Social support systems; Technology-
delivered activities; Environmental and systems change; Incentives and disincentive activities; and social
marketing/mass media. The text, pg. 207 discusses 6 major intervention strategies- read for understanding.
Discuss the types of interventions you feel are most important for your topic and the specific strategies and
activities under each intervention type. Limit to three types of interventions. For full points, cite literature to
support the strategies selected. Write out intervention strategies in essay style or bullets. Add enough information
so it is clear what the intervention strategies will accomplish and write them as you are going to carry them out.
Example: Selected interventions to decrease youth tobacco initiation and use: 1) regulatory activities, 2) youth
coalition building, and 3) educational activities (I’ve written out strategies for only 1 intervention type)
Regulatory Activities
Enforce tobacco free campus policies at school grounds during sporting events. Students will meet with
school leaders and the district school board to discuss stronger enforcement of school wide tobacco free
policy at all sporting events. (Cooper, et al, 2016)
Conduct undercover under-aged youth tobacco sales operations. Penalize offenders and reward abiders of
the law. Students will work with local agencies to enforce limitations of tobacco sales to minors. (Agee, 2018)
Restrict minor tobacco use on property adjacent to the high school before and after school and during lunch
periods. Conduct joint meetings with local property owners, school leaders, law enforcement and students to
develop an enforcement plan and a plan for offering free cessation services and nicotine replacement to
tobacco using youth. (Smith, 2017)
Seek support from the School Board to strengthen tobacco policy wording, add vaping restrictions, and to
update and increase tobacco free campus signage at all district schools and sporting centers. Notify all staff,
students, families, and the community about new tobacco policy improvements. (Cooper, et al, 2016)
3. Potential for Success- 5 pts (critical thinking questions)
a. Discuss why your intended approaches would work (e.g., how do they impact predisposing, enabling, or
reinforcing factors?) Write no more than two paragraphs and cite for support.
b. Discuss sustainability of the intervention plan- what will help this work continue? Think about reinforcing
factors in the community- organizations, leaders, schools, etc.
