INTRODUCTION
The journey of making pens with charcoal has a long and interesting history. Charcoal,
which is easy to find and can be used in many ways, and has been used by different cultures for
a very long time. People in ancient times would burn sticks or bones to make charcoal and then
use it to write on walls or objects like pottery. As time passed, we as research thinks on how we
can improve pens with use of charcoal, to make them better for writing. This development shows
how important charcoal pens have been in helping humans communicate and express
themselves throughout history.
Inks have been one of the essential tools for teachers, without ink teachers will have a
hard time demonstrating or writing anything on the whiteboard. A bottle of a ink is quite
expensive in the market, users tend to spend at least 100 pesos per bottle. If a bottle contains
100 ml then an average user could use up at least 20 mL per day, so a bottle for 5 days. A study
stated that some commercial inks can harm the environment and can cause all sorts of health
issues because of the chemical named isopropanol, this is a solvent chemical. Inhaling the fumes
of commercially based markers containing this chemical can cause all sorts of health issues. This
study aims to produce an alternative marker ink using charcoal as its main product which the
researcher can use to make a tar then use it as an ingredient in making an ink.
PROJECT CONTEXT
The researcher investigating a novel concept in the current push for eco-friendly products:
creating pens out of charcoal. Because it is renewable and natural, charcoal is an excellent
material for sustainable production. The prospect of developing pens that are environmentally
friendly in addition to being excellent writers excites us. We want to demonstrate how little
material modifications may result in more environmentally friendly options for commonplace
products like pens by utilizing charcoal in creative ways.
PROJECT DESCRIPTION
Our project, “Charpen”, is a tool that everyone can use specially the students.
It is derived from a “Pen” made up of charcoal.
Its purpose is to promote the use of natural ink that is quite cheaper than other brands while still
having the great quality of a traditional writing pen.
•Market Differentiation
Charcoal pens offer a unique selling proposition in the stationery market, appealing to
environmentally conscious consumers and those looking for distinctive, eco-friendly products.
This differentiation can create a niche market and potentially attract new customers.
RELATED LITERATURE
Drawing on ancient techniques, artist and primitive arts instructor Nick Neddo shows you
how to reconnect with nature to make and use your own all-natural art supplies. The Organic
Artist encourages you to return to those days when art was made with all-natural materials, like
charcoal and birch bark. Immersing you in the natural world, this book seeks to inspire creativity
by connecting you to your organic roots. In addition to offering a wide variety of suggestions for
using nature as supplies for art, this book also introduces the concepts of awareness and
perception that are foundational to the creative process. Readers will refine drawing skills, as well
as increase their appreciation for the visual arts and the natural landscape. Some of the projects
and skills covered include the following: Making paper and wild ink Working with soapstone, clay,
wood, and rawhide Printmaking and stenciling Natural pigments and dyes Camouflage and body
painting Nature journaling Learn to find satisfaction in the natural process of transformation.
(Neddo, 2015).
Permanent marker is a type of marker pen that is used to create permanent or
semipermanent writing on an object. In general, the ink comprises a main carrier solvent, a
glyceride, a pyrrolidone, a resin and a colorant, making it water resistant (Devlin, 2015). Activated
charcoal consists of small, black beads or a solid black porous sponge. It is used in water filters,
medicines that selectively remove toxins, and chemical purification processes (Helmenstine,
2019). Activated carbon is a highly porous substance that attracts and holds organic chemicals
(Olovarez, 2016).
After the in depth search done by the researchers, this chapter includes the related
literatures and past studies regarding this study. This chapter presents the idea that the
researchers based while making this study.
The researchers have chosen this theory as our guide in conducting this study, it states
the different kind of materials in making an ink. Some of them are organic. It also states that the
scientist are developing even a higher-resolution ink which the researchers can relate it to the
study and in order for them to create or produce a high-resolution whiteboard marker ink.
This theory relates to the study because an activated carbon is a charcoal in its pure form.
This theory explains how activated charcoal will react when being adsorb by a solvent or solvent.
This will give a lot of information to the researchers because the researchers will add a solvent to
the charcoal which is the isopropyl in order to make it erasable and used engine oil to make it
thicker.
SYNTHESIS
Charcoal is a carbon-containing substance made from wood, naturally black and powdery.
Charcoal is made from wood by heating it in an “airless” (minimal oxygen) space at a high
temperature. The wood will not burn, but instead turn into charcoal. The by-product of making
charcoal is tar and turpentine. As time goes by the researchers found a way on how they can
make an novation through the use of charcoal. Researchers discover that charcoal can be use as
an alternative ink, Researchers found charcoal ink as an eco-friendly and charcoal has been
found to be comparable to hard charcoal in strength and low ash content, making it suitable for
use as ink .
