Compressible Lab Report

This document describes procedures for drawing performance curves for centrifugal turbo-blowers operating at a constant rotational speed by measuring pressure, temperature, flow rate and calculating head, flow, power and efficiency at different valve positions. Key steps include taking measurements, calculating flow rate, head, power and efficiency, and drawing curves of head versus flow, power versus flow and efficiency versus flow.

Introduction:

When selecting a centrifugal Turbo-blower, one should match the performance of the
blower to that needed by the system. To do that, an engineer would refer to a blower
performance curve. A blower performance curve indicates how a blower will perform
regarding blower head and flow. A curve is defined for a specific operating rotational
speed (rpm) and a specific inlet/outlet diameter.

Objectives:
➢ The main objective of this experiment is to know how to draw the
performance for any centrifugal turbo-blowers.
➢ Draw performance curves (H-Q1), (B.P.-Q1) and (η-Q1) of centrifugal blower
operating at constant rotational speed.

Test Procedures:
1) Check the electric motor wiring, the measuring devices and make sure that the
gate valve (3) is fully opened.
2) Read the ambient conditions (pressure, p & temperature, T).
3) Switch the electric motor.
4) Measure the blower rotational speed.
5) Read the values of temperature and pressure at blower suction (4).
6) Read the values of temperature and pressure at blower discharge (6).
7) Read the dynamic pressure head of the Pitot-static tube (7).
8) Using the Clamp-meter to measure the input electric current to the electric
motor.
9) Calculate the blower characteristics (Hact, Q1, input brake power B.P. and
overall efficiency ηo)
10) Partially close the valve (3) and then repeat steps 5, 6 & 7 and so on till having
no discharge (fully closed valve).
11) Draw the performance curve at the measured inlet conditions of the air and
blower rotational speed.

Measurements:
1) Measurement of inlet flow velocity in the suction pipe using pitot-static tube at point
(1) in the suction pipe.

2) Measurement of suction and delivery pressures using two pressure gauges (Bourdon
gauge)
3) Measurement of input electric current to the electric motor using clamp meter.
4) Measurement of suction and delivery Temperatures using thermocouples

Calculations:
1. Blower Discharge (Volume Flow Rate)
Using pitot-static meter to measure suction velocity (assuming the velocity
distribution is uniform over the cross-sectional area of the suction pipe).
From mass conservation- at Steady Sate, between point (1) at the suction
pipe and point (2) at the discharge pipe, as follows:

2. Blower Actual Head

For each data point, calculate the blower actual head by apply the energy
conservation law between point (1) in suction pipe and point (2) in
delivery pipe. Hact = Actual blower head [J/kg]

Conclusions:
▪ Increasing the discharge led to an increase in the actual head of the centrifugal
blower.
▪ It is better to design the centrifugal blower with radial blade or backward
curved blade for more stability.
▪ In the design point, efficiency is maximized.
