Regions in Mindanao

The concept of MINSUPALA, while not an official geopolitical designation, underscores the
interconnectedness of these regions in terms of cultural heritage, environmental conservation,
and
socio-economic challenges and opportunities. Each area contributes to the rich tapestry of the
Philippines' identity, offering unique landscapes, biodiversity, and cultural experiences.
Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines, is divided into six administrative regions.
These
regions are home to a diverse array of cultures, languages, and natural resources, contributing
significantly to the country's cultural heritage and economy. Here's a brief overview of each
region:
1. Zamboanga Peninsula (Region IX): This region includes the provinces of

 Zamboanga del Norte,


 Zamboanga del Sur
 Zamboanga Sibugay

as well as the highly urbanized city of

 Zamboanga City

It is known for its picturesque landscapes, including beaches, coves, and a mountainous interior.
The region's economy is largely based on agriculture, fishing, and mining.
2. Northern Mindanao (Region X): Comprising the provinces of

 Bukidnon
 Camiguin
 Lanao del Norte
 Misamis Occidental
 Misamis Oriental,

as well as the cities of

 Cagayan de Oro
 Iligan

this region is known for its agricultural productivity, particularly in pineapple and sugarcane
production. It also boasts natural attractions like the Maria Cristina Falls and the stunning
beaches of Camiguin Island.
3. Davao Region (Region XI): This region includes the provinces of

 Davao del Norte


 Davao del Sur
 Davao Oriental
 Davao de Oro
 Davao Occidental

along with the highly urbanized city of

 Davao City

It is a major producer of bananas, pineapples, coffee, and coconuts. The region is also famous for
Mount Apo, the highest peak in the Philippines.
4. SOCCSKSARGEN (Region XII): The acronym stands for the region's provinces and cities:

 South Cotabato
 Cotabato
 Sultan Kudarat
 Sarangani
 General Santos City

The region is known for its agricultural production, particularly of rice, corn, and tropical fruits.
Lake Sebu, in South Cotabato, is a notable cultural and natural attraction.
5. Caraga (Region XIII): This region includes the provinces of

 Agusan del Norte


 Agusan del Sur
 Surigao del Norte
 Surigao del Sur
 Dinagat Islands

Caraga is rich in natural resources and is a major producer of rice, bananas, and seafood. It is
also known for its surfing spots in Siargao Island and the enchanting beauty of the Hinatuan
Enchanted River.
6. Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM): Established to provide
greater autonomy to the Muslim-majority areas in Mindanao, BARMM includes the provinces of

 Basilan (except Isabela City)


 Lanao del Sur
 Maguindanao
 Sulu
 Tawi-Tawi

and the cities of

 Marawi
 Lamitan
