Nanny

Do you know what a nanny is? That’s right, a person who looks after small children, usually a woman.
Often, they live with the family and they look after the children when the parents can’t do it, because
they are at work. Are there any male nannies? Yes, of course! Some families, maybe if

the mother is single, or the father travels a lot, prefer a male nanny. And what’s the difference? There is
no difference really. Nannies, male or female, can play sports and do outdoor activities with the children
– especially in the holidays, when the children want to be active but their parents need to work.

The pet store.

George is at the pet store, looking at what kind of pet he might want to get for his birthday. George
asked if he could have a horse, but his parents said no because horses are too big.

First, he sees dogs and cats. Baby dogs are called puppies. Baby cats are called kittens. George likes them
because they are easy to take care of and can play a lot, but they will get bigger. George wants a small
pet.

Then George sees animals that have to live in a cage. He sees rabbits, guinea pigs, and mice. Mice are
what you call more than one mouse. He likes these animals because they are small. Birds live in cages
too. George sees a parrot and a canary. He likes them all, but he doesn’t want to clean the cage.

George sees the animals in tanks. The tanks full of water have fish and turtles in them. He thinks about a
goldfish but decides he likes the turtles more. There are also tanks with rocks and sand that have snakes,
spiders, and scorpions, but George is afraid of them. George likes the turtles best, but they won’t fit in
the little fishbowls. Turtles need bigger tanks, so they can swim sometimes and hide sometimes.

George decides he wants to get a turtle for his birthday. He buys a book on how to take care of a turtle
and a list of what types of turtles the store has.

PROBLEMS

1. Jon's problem: My problem is I'm always tired. I work in a cafe from seven in the morning to six
in the evening. I drink a lot of coffee at work because I'm tired. I never have breakfast, but I
usually have a sandwich and a cake for lunch. I don't often go out in the evenings because I'm
tired. 2. Layla's problem: My husband does nothing in the house. I often get home after work and
there isn't any food in the flat so I always buy food and cook. He says he isn't hungry and he
doesn't want a big dinner. He wants to sit down and he watches TV all evening. I think it's
important to have dinner together and talk. 3. Rob's problem: There are a lot of beautiful places
in the world but I never see them. My problem is I don't like travelling by plane, train, boat or car
so I never go on holiday.

What a strange place to meet!

1. Omar: In Algeria, in the Sahara Desert.

I was on a bus to Timimoun, a town in the desert. The bus had engine problems and we stopped in a
small village for the night.

The local people were very friendly, and one guy, Habib, took me home to his family.

I thought he was a really nice person. We talked a lot and became great friends.

2. Jon: In hospital in China. I was in a car accident and broke my leg.

I went to hospital and was there for a week. There was a Chinese guy in my room, Li. We had a lot of
time to talk and became great friends, and never lost contact.

3. Alison: In a cafe in Argentina.

I was on holiday, and someone took my money. I sat down in a cafe. I didn't have any money but I
was very hungry. The waitress came to my table and said, 'Hi, I'm Claudia. Do you need help?' We
were instant best friends!

4. Cynthia: On a rope bridge in Pakistan!

I walked from one side, and another woman, Anne, walked from the other side. We met in the
center, and we were both very scared.

We were there for half an hour. Finally, a guide came and helped us.

After that half-hour together we were friends for life.

Witness statement.
Jim Black was a good friend and we were business partners. We sometimes visited places together at

killed Jim.

Yesterday afternoon I played tennis with Jim for an hour.

We started at two o'clock and then at half past three, we went to our rooms in the hotel.

I met Jim and Carla at seven o'clock in the restaurant. Jim was very quiet, but Carla talked a lot. I
think Jim was angry with her, but I don't know why. We ate dinner together and after that I went to
my room at ten. l think Jim went out.

I didn't go to bed. I wasn't tired and so I listened to the radio.

A. Life in the year 2000 was very different from life in 1900.

In 1900 in the USA, there were three and a half children in an average family. The top boy's name
was John and the top girl's name was Mary.

In 2000, the top names were Jacob and Emily and there was only one child in each family.

B. In 2000 there were 54 million new cars on the roads.

In 1900, there were only 4,000 new cars. In cities transport was by horse and a small number of
buses.

C. The number of people in cities was very different. London was the top city in 1900 with 6 million
people.
The top city in 2000 was Tokyo with 27 million people.

D. Women's lives were very different both at home and in public.

For example, in the 2000 Olympics there were 827 women and 1,512 men, but in 1900 there were
1,319 men and only 19 women.

E. 1900 was the year of the Kodak Brownie camera. Letters were the only way to communicate
except for telephones in some rich families.

In 2000 was big and there were mobile phones with cameras.

The Last Stop is a restaurant with a difference. The restaurant is an old train station. And it’s an
interesting place. There’s an old steam train in the middle of the restaurant. The train is now a bar.

We sat at the bar and looked at the menu while we waited for our table. Station Master’s Soup, Train
Driver’s Special, First-class Ticket: the names of the food are all connected to the station theme.

The service was quick and friendly. The food was good. Very good. And the atmosphere was great. I
really recommend The Last Stop for a fantastic night out!

How to reach your goals

Here’s a typical situation. Someone says, 'I'm going to lose weight'. 'I'm going to change jobs'. 'I'm
going to stop smoking.' One month, two months or one year later. there's no change. When we have
a goal, how can we be sure we reach it?

Here are 8 top tips:

1. Write the goal on a piece of paper. Put it over your desk.

2. Tell a friend your goal. Ask him or her for help.

3. Don't talk about it a lot- you lose energy that way. Talking is not doing. You want to do.

4. Make the goal concrete. Don't say, 'I'm going to save money'; say, 'I'm going to save $1,000 in six
months.'

5. Give a start and finish date.

6. Be sure the goal is your goal, not a goal that someone gave you.

7. Do something to reach your goal every day.

8.Close Friends helping can be ok for your goals.

cook in our small kitchen. I eat any vegetable, but my sister eats only a few. My family always eats

likes to listen to music. Mom works on the computer. I watch television. And my sister reads. Soon
we go to bed. My parents go to bed late, but my sister and I go to bed early. I’m ready to go to sleep

a big beard. He always looked very serious, but he had a great sense of humor! He loved science and
he loved teaching. He was the best teacher I ever had.’ ‘ Dani was a Spanish student. He was 21. He

Gardeners and florists are the happiest workers

A new survey puts gardeners and florists at number one in

the happiness league. But what makes them so happy?

Nine out of ten gardeners and florists say they are happy in their

jobs. That compares with four out of ten once workers. We asked

them why.

‘I love my job! I spend all day in the open air, all year round,

seven days a week! I love watching the plants grow and

change from spring to summer to autumn.’

Dave, gardener, Brighton

Being in contact with nature and working outdoors are two very

important things for gardeners. Florists’ jobs are a little different.

They don’t work outdoors, they don’t grow the flowers, but they

are just as happy!

‘I have a small flower shop in the town center. I work five days

a week and sometimes at weekends. I love every minute.

I love flowers and I really like helping people decorate a hotel

or a restaurant or a special place for a special occasion.’

Chloe, florist, Edinburgh

So, if you want to be happy at work, get a job as a gardener or

a florist!
