Archimedes Principle
Archimedes Principle
Objectives
Abstract
From the experimental test of Archimedes Principle, we have concluded that when object is placed in a
fluid it experiences an upward reaction force to its weight from the liquid and this force is equal to the weight of
liquid displaced by the object. As the volume displaced by the wooden block is greater than the metal cylinder
so it experiences more buoyant force and will float while the metal block sinks. The density of wooden block
was less than water while it was greater than water for metallic cylinder.
Introduction
An object will either sink to the bottom of a fluid or float on top of it when it is submerged in any form of fluid.
According to Newton's laws of motion, an item must be under the influence of a net force that is pushing it
upward or downward for this phenomenon to exist. This net force is referred to as the buoyant force in relation
to fluids since it always pushes upward. The Archimedes' principle refers to the buoyant force, which is defined
as the weight of the fluid displaced by an object. There are three scenarios that can happen depending on the
density of the fluid and the object: either the object has a lower density than the fluid and will float, either the
object has a higher density and will sink, or the object has a density equal to the fluid and will remain suspended
anywhere within that fluid.
To verify the idea that the buoyant force equals the weight of the displaced fluid, Archimedes' principle will be
examined in this experiment along with buoyant forces and specific gravity.
Experimental Procedure
To determine the Archimedes principle we have used two object, metal cylinder and wooden block , the
parameters are given in below table.
Metal Cylinder
Mass 32.5 g
Height 4.19 cm
Diameter 1.9 cm
Volume 11.8798cm^3
Wooden Block
Mass 26.7 g
Height 4.39 cm
Diameter 3.1 cm
Volume 59.8796cm^3
The buoyancy force will be equal to the weight of water displaced by the object i.e submergd
volume.

Conclusion
From the experiment the hypothesis regarding Archimedes principle was supported that when an object is
immersed in liquid the weight of the object acts downward and in reaction an upward force act on the object by
the liquid and this buoyant force is equal to the weight of liquid displaced by water. The specific gravity of
wooden block is less than 1 so it will float while for metal cylinder it was 8.1625 so it sinks.
