PREPARATION
● Have the computers powered on and in ready mode before the session begins
● Have a participant write the learning objectives on the board
● Ask a participant to sit in groups of 2 or 3 around a computer
● Say: Today we will learn how to use a computer and how to access information on the
internet
● Say: Let’s get started by seating ourselves in groups of 3 or 4 students per computer.
We have already turned on the computers for you so we can all begin by first learning
the important buttons that will help open different applications on the computer. Make
sure you rotate so that everyone has an opportunity to practice.
1. On the desktop (main screen), left click the icon at the left bottom.
2. Select ‘All Programs’ from the menu appearing on the left hand side of the
screen.
3. Left click on “Accessories” for applications like Paint, Notepad and Calculator
● Give Directions:
1. Click the Start menu.
2. Select All Programs.
3. Select Google Chrome
OR Look for the Google Chrome Icon on the your desktop screen
● Say: The arrow indicates the position of the cursor. Here we will type out the name of
the website we want to visit. Today we will first visit “www.google.com” so that we can
get to the google search engine.
● Say: On google’s search bar, we will type the name of our city to find out more
information about the city and left click on “Google Search”
● Say: Open the first option that comes up in your search and read what it says
● Say: On the top right corner, there is a box. This box helps us find different things on the
internet. You can click on Youtube to watch videos, you can click on “Maps” to find out
distances and look for nearby shops. You can use calendar to fix appointments or look
for holidays.
● Say: The tiny button on the top left, helps open a new tab or screen on Chrome. This
way we can open multiple websites at one time.
(refer to the screenshot for highlighted apps)
● Say: Let’s click on Youtube to open and search for a video on Generation
● Say: The sleep mode ensures that all your data is kept as it is, so when you return to the
computer it starts at exactly where you left things. So say if you were reading an article
on Chrome when you put your computer on sleep mode, the computer will restart at the
exact same article, so you can continue reading.
● Say: Sleep mode does not turn off the computer! So if you want to switch off the
computer you always should choose “Shut Down”
● Say: You will now put into practice the skills you learned today. Make sure you rotate so
that everyone gets to practice these skills.
Independent Activity
● Say: Search for
MS Word, Calculator, Minesweeper, Notepad, MS Excel
● Say: Once you have opened them, use the top right “x” to close them
● Say: Open Google Chrome
● Say: Go to google.com and search for New Delhi
● Say: In a new tab, go to wikipedia.org and search for your hometown
● Say: Go to Youtube and search for a video on < Instructor can decide the topic for
video search>
● Say: After you finish this, close all applications and shut down the computer
Instructor note: Observe participants as they work through this session. If participants need
extra time to practice with computers, try to look for open moments in the calendar (perhaps
during lunch or in the afternoons after sessions finish) when they can practice these activities
again for more mastery.
