16
Work Flow Model

During my internship at a leading cargo shipping company, I had the opportunity to

gain insights into the intricate workflow model that underpins the smooth movement of
goods worldwide. At the core of this model is a meticulously designed process that
spans from the initial receipt of shipment requests to the final delivery of cargo. Let me
delve into the details of the workflow model I observed during my time at the company.

The process commences with the receipt of shipment requests from a diverse range of
clients, including individual shippers, businesses, and freight forwarders. These
requests provide vital information such as the type of cargo, dimensions, destination,
and preferred delivery timeline. As an intern, I witnessed the meticulous assessment of
these requirements by the operations team, who then initiate the process of scheduling
transportation.

Collaboration is key as the operations team engages with various stakeholders,

including carriers, trucking companies, and port authorities, to coordinate the logistics
necessary for transporting the cargo. This involves evaluating the most suitable mode
of transportation – whether by sea, air, rail, or road – based on factors such as cost,
transit time, and cargo specifications.

I had the opportunity to observe the careful packing and preparation of cargo, ensuring
compliance with industry standards and regulatory requirements. Documentation
played a crucial role at this stage, with the operations team meticulously completing
and filing necessary paperwork such as bills of lading, customs declarations, and
export/import permits.

17
Throughout the journey of the cargo, I witnessed the operations team closely
monitoring its progress in real-time. Clear communication channels were maintained
with all parties involved, providing regular updates on the status of the shipment and
promptly addressing any issues or delays that arose.

Upon arrival at the destination port or airport, meticulous customs clearance procedures
is facilitated by the company's experienced customs brokerage team. This involved
navigating complex customs regulations, ensuring compliance with import/export laws,
and facilitating the payment of duties and taxes.

In the final stages of the process, the careful coordination of last-mile delivery to the
cargo's ultimate destination is ensured, whether it be a warehouse, distribution centre,
or directly to the client's doorstep. Throughout every step of the process, the company's
workflow model prioritized efficiency, transparency, and customer satisfaction.

Competitor Analysis

Conducting a competitor analysis is crucial for Trident Shipping Private Limited to

understand its position in the maritime logistics industry. Below is an analysis of four
key competitors: Fast Forward Logistics, Affreighter Logistics, Transpeed Logistics,
and Seyon Logistics.

Fast Forward Logistics

Fast Forward Logistics is renowned for its emphasis on efficiency and technological
innovation. With a robust network and advanced tracking systems, they excel in
providing timely deliveries. However, their premium pricing strategy may deter cost-
conscious clients, potentially limiting market share among certain demographics.
Trident Shipping can capitalize on this by offering competitive pricing without
compromising quality service.

Affreighter Logistics

Affreighter Logistics differentiates itself by focusing on personalized customer service

and handling specialized cargo. While they may lack the expansive network of larger
competitors, their attention to detail and tailored solutions attracts clients with unique
shipping requirements. Trident Shipping can leverage its resources to target similar
niche markets and provide tailored services to gain a competitive advantage.

Transpeed Logistics

Transpeed Logistics boasts a global presence and offers end-to-end supply chain
management solutions. Their extensive network of partners enables them to serve
clients across various industries. However, their reliance on traditional logistics
methods may hinder their ability to adapt to rapidly changing market demands. Trident
Shipping can position itself as a more agile and innovative alternative,

23
especially in markets where Transpeed Logistics may be slow to adopt new
technologies.

Seyon Logistics

Seyon Logistics focuses on agility and flexibility, catering to regional clients with
localized expertise. While they may lack the resources of larger competitors, their
personalized approach resonates with clients seeking customized solutions. Trident
Shipping can emphasize its global reach and scalability to appeal to clients with diverse
needs, while also leveraging its regional expertise to compete effectively in specific
markets.

Each competitor brings unique strengths and weaknesses to the table. Fast Forward
Logistics and Transpeed Logistics dominate with their extensive networks and
technological prowess, while Affreighter Logistics and Seyon Logistics carve out
niches with personalized service offerings.
Trident Shipping can capitalize on its strengths, such as agility and innovation, to
differentiate itself in the market and gain a competitive edge.

24
Market Share Analysis

To calculate Trident Shipping's market share, we first need to determine the size of the
cargo shipping industry. The global cargo shipping industry is substantial, with an
estimated worth of several trillion dollars annually. However, for the sake of this
analysis, let's consider the Indian cargo shipping industry, which has been steadily
growing over the years.

According to industry reports, the Indian cargo shipping industry was valued at around
$60 billion in recent years. With Trident Shipping having an annual turnover of 4 crores
(40 million INR), we can calculate its market share as follows:

Trident Shipping's Market Share = (Trident Shipping's Annual Turnover / Total Indian
Cargo Shipping Industry Annual Revenue) * 100

= (4 crores / 60 billion INR) * 100

= (40,000,000 / 60,000,000,000) * 100
= 0.0667%
Trident Shipping's market share in the Indian cargo shipping industry is approximately
0.0667%.

Trident Shipping, despite its relatively small annual turnover compared to the vast cargo
shipping industry, plays a significant role in its niche market. With a market share of
approximately 0.0667%, Trident Shipping demonstrates its presence and contribution
to the Indian cargo shipping landscape.

While the company's market share may seem modest in comparison to industry giants,
such as multinational logistics corporations, it's essential to recognize the value Trident
Shipping brings to its customers. Despite its size, Trident Shipping focuses on
providing reliable and efficient shipping solutions, catering to the specific needs of its
clientele.

25
Furthermore, Trident Shipping's market share represents its foothold in the industry and
its potential for growth. As the company continues to expand its operations, invest in
infrastructure, and explore new markets, its market share is poised to increase gradually.

Trident Shipping's dedication to customer satisfaction, coupled with strategic planning

and innovation, positions it for future success in the dynamic and competitive cargo
shipping industry.

This analysis underscores the importance of not only evaluating market share in
absolute terms but also recognizing the potential for growth and impact, even for
smaller players like Trident Shipping.

forces at work in a given industry. Applying this model to Trident Shipping Private
Limited provides insights into the company's competitive landscape and potential
challenges.

1. Threat of New Entrants:

The threat of new entrants in the shipping industry is moderate. While the industry
requires significant capital investment and expertise, the barriers to entry are not
insurmountable. Technological advancements and the rise of new, agile players can
pose a threat to established companies like Trident Shipping.

2. Bargaining Power of Suppliers:

The bargaining power of suppliers in the shipping industry is high. Fuel suppliers, port
authorities, and shipping vessel providers have significant influence on shipping costs
and operations. Trident Shipping needs to maintain strong relationships with its
suppliers and negotiate effectively to secure competitive rates and reliable services.

3. Bargaining Power of Buyers:

The bargaining power of buyers in the shipping industry is moderate to high, depending
on the size and volume of their shipments. Large multinational companies with
significant shipping needs can negotiate lower rates and exert pressure on shipping
companies. Trident Shipping needs to focus on providing value-added services and
building strong customer relationships to retain clients and maintain profitability.

4. Threat of Substitutes:
The threat of substitutes in the shipping industry is low to moderate. While alternative
modes of transportation like air freight and rail exist, they often come with limitations
in terms of cost, capacity, and delivery time. However, advancements in technology
and logistics solutions could potentially lead to the emergence of more viable
substitutes in the future.

5. Competitive Rivalry:
The competitive rivalry in the shipping industry is intense. Numerous established
players and new entrants compete for market share. Trident Shipping needs to

forwarding industry is inherently susceptible to external factors such as geopolitical
developments, economic fluctuations, and regulatory changes. These factors can
disrupt operations and introduce uncertainty for the company. Additionally, the
industry is highly competitive, with numerous players vying for market share and
customers. This intense competition can put pressure on prices and profitability for
Trident Shipping. Furthermore, the company's reliance on third-party service providers,
such as shipping lines, airlines, and trucking companies, exposes it to potential
disruptions and inefficiencies caused by these external partners. Such disruptions can
impact service quality and turnaround times, potentially affecting customer satisfaction.

Opportunities:
Trident Shipping can leverage its strengths to capitalize on several promising

39
growth potential for the company. Expanding operations or focusing on these markets
can lead to increased market share and revenue. Additionally, the rapid growth of e-
commerce has fuelled the demand for international shipping and logistics services.
Trident Shipping can tap into this growing market to generate new business
opportunities and expand its customer base.
Furthermore, embracing cutting-edge technologies like blockchain, automation, and
artificial intelligence can further optimize the company's operations, enhance customer
satisfaction, and open doors to new service offerings. By staying at the forefront of
technological advancements, Trident Shipping can gain a competitive edge and position
itself for future success.

Threats:
Trident Shipping must remain vigilant about potential threats in the industry. Economic
volatility can lead to a decline in trade activity, subsequently reducing the demand for
freight forwarding services and impacting the company's business. Additionally,
frequent changes in trade regulations, customs rules, or international agreements can
increase compliance complexity and costs for Trident Shipping. The company needs to
maintain a flexible and adaptable approach to navigate these regulatory changes
effectively. Furthermore, security risks such as cargo theft, piracy, and cyber threats
pose a constant threat to the safety and integrity of shipments

By understanding its strengths and weaknesses, Trident Shipping can leverage its
internal capabilities to seize external opportunities and mitigate potential threats. This
SWOT analysis provides a valuable framework for strategic decision-making and
ensures that the company remains competitive and adaptable in the ever-changing
