Assignment on Unit III (Shafts, Keys and Couplings)

Q1) A shaft is supported in two bearings 400 mm apart and carries a bevel gear of 200 mm pitch
diameter at one end and overhanging beyond the nearer bearing by 150 mm. The gear produces a
radial load of 9.8 kN, thrust load of 2.9 kN and a tangential load of 28 kN. Shaft speed is 600
rpm.
i) Determine the shaft diameter at section 1-1 on the basis of ASME code. Shaft material has
yield strength of 135 N/mm2 and ultimate tensile strength of 280 N/mm2. The gear is keyed to
the shaft. Kb = 1.5, Kt = 1.0.
ii) How much power is transmitted by the shaft?

Q2) Figure shows the transmission shaft supporting the helical gears. Helical gear G of pitch
circle diameter 400 mm receives the power from an electric motor and helical pinion P of pitch
circle diameter 100 mm drives the machine. The ultimate and yield strengths of the shaft material
are 630 MPa and 380 MPa respectively. If combined shock and fatigue factor for bending is 2.0
and combined shock and fatigue factor for twisting is 1.5, design the shaft using the A.S.M.E
code. Find also the torsional deflection of the shaft.

Q3) A standard splined connection 8 × 36 × 40 is used for a gear and shaft assembly rotating
at 700 rpm. The length of the gear hub is 50 mm and the normal pressure on the splines is limited
to 6.5 N/mm2. Calculate the power that can be transmitted from the gear to the shaft.

Q4) A 400 mm diameter pulley A, mounted on a counter shaft midway between bearings 1200
mm apart, transmits 50 kW power to a machine below it by a flat belt drive. The power is fed to
countershaft by another pulley B 300 mm in diameter and mounted at an overhang of 300 mm.
The electric motor vertically below pulley B provides power to it. The belts of both the pulleys
are vertical and coefficient of friction between belt and pulley surface is 0.3. The countershaft
rotates at 560 r.p.m. Design the shaft taking permissible shear and normal stresses of 45 MPa and
70 MPa. Assume 20 % overloading of shaft. Take Kb = 1.5 and Kt = 1.1. Find the diameter of
solid shaft. If the shaft is hollow with ratio of inner diameter to outer diameter 0.6, calculate
percentage saving in material and increase in radial dimension of shaft.
Q5) A cylindrical shaft made of steel of yield strength 700 MPa is subjected to static loads
consisting of a bending moment of 10 kN-m and a torsional moment of 30 kN-m. Determine the
diameter of the shaft using two different theories of failure and assuming a factor of safety of 2.

Q6) The engine of a ship develops 440 kW and transmits the power by a horizontal propeller
shaft which runs at 120 r.p.m. It is proposed to design a hollow propeller shaft with inner
diameter as 0.6 of the outer diameter. Considering torsion alone, calculate the diameter of the
propeller shaft if stress in the material is not to exceed 63 MPa and also the angular twist over a
length of 2.5 m is not to be more than 1°. The modulus of rigidity of the shaft material is 80 GPa.

Q7) The shaft of an axial flow rotary compressor is subjected to a maximum torque of 2000 N-m
and a maximum bending moment of 4000 N-m. The combined shock and fatigue factor in
torsion is 1.5 and that in bending is 2. Design the diameter of the shaft, if the shear stress in the
shaft is 50 MPa. Design a hollow shaft for the above compressor taking the ratio of outer
diameter to the inner diameter as 2.
What is the percentage saving in material ? Also compare the stiffness.

Q8) Design a bushed-pin type flexible coupling for connecting a motor shaft to a pump shaft for
the following service conditions :
Power to be transmitted = 40 kW ; speed of the motor shaft = 1000 r.p.m. ; diameter of the motor
shaft = 50 mm ; diameter of the pump shaft = 45 mm. The bearing pressure in the rubber bush
and allowable stress in the pins are to be limited to 0.45 N/mm 2 and 25 MPa respectively.

Q9) A steel shaft has a diameter of 25 mm. The shaft rotates at a speed of 600 r.p.m. and
transmits 30 kW through a gear. The tensile and yield strength of the material of shaft are 650
MPa and 353 MPa respectively. Taking a factor of safety 3, select a suitable key for the gear.
Assume that the key and shaft are made of the same material.
