Manual 3: Kriging

In this portion of the tutorial you are going to use the Datamine processes to estimate Au grades
into a 3D block model using drillhole data. The plan for this tutorial is as follows:
1. Creating Block model prototype
2. Filling the wireframe model
3. Recap: Drillholes compositing
4. Variogram modeling
5. Grade estimation [Zone 2]
6. Creating Tonnage Grade report

 Creating Block model prototype

1. Activate the Model ribbon and select Create | Auto Prototype

2. In the Create Model Prototype dialog, choose the parameters shown below and click OK
I. Loaded data: your wireframe model “newwireframetr”
II. Model prototype name: PROTO

(What do these numbers mean? The "...Origin" fields determine the origin of the model. This is
important as block models work on a local coordinate system, with all points referenced to the origin.
The "...Size" fields represent the size in XYZ for each model cuboid and the NX/Y/Z fields represent the
total number of cells in each direction - with all that information, a compound cuboid-of-cuboids can be
constructed in the 3D world space)
 Filling the wireframe model

1. Activate the Model ribbon and select Fill Wireframes.

2. In the Volumetric Block Modeling dialog, Prototype Block Model group, browse your
project folder and select the file “PROTO”.
3. In the Boundary Wireframes group, first row:

 Select Run
 In Wireframe, browse your project folder, select “newwireframetr”
 Select the Zone Field [ZONE] and Zone Code option [(From Field)]
 Select the Plane [XY] and Boundary Type [Solid - Fill Inside]

7. In the Output group, define the Block Model name as 'GEOMODEL'.

8. Check the cell “Optimize subcells”
9. Click Apply.
10. When finished, close the Volumetric Block Modeling dialog (Cancel).
11. Check that GEOMODEL is listed in the Project Files control bar.
 Recap: Drillholes compositing
Now we will use the process COMPDH to composite the drillholes down their lengths, so that each
composite is of length 2 m and contains a single rock type. This is done by using the rock type code
field NLITH as well as the compositing "Zone" field:

1. Select the 3D window.

2. Activate the Sample Analysis ribbon and expand the Composite menu to select
Composite Down Drillholes.
3. In the COMPDH dialog, Files tab, define the input and output files shown below:
4. In the COMPDH dialog, Fields tab, define the fields shown below (be sure to select
NLITH for the ZONE2 field, not LITH):

5. In the COMPDH dialog, Parameters tab, define the settings shown below, and click OK.

Let’s check the output dataset, the interval of 2m goes down until there is change in rock type:
 Variogram modeling
Let’s calculate experimental variogram for Au in Zone 2:

1. Activate the Estimate ribbon and select Standard | Calculate.

2. In the VGRAM dialog window, Input Filed group, browse your project folder and select
the file “comp_2m”.
3. In the Output group, define the file name as 'exp_variogram_z1'.

4. Go to “Fields” tab and specify the variable of interest, as shown below:

5. In “Parameters” tab, define the Lag distance of 15 m:

6. In Retrieval tab, specify the Zone of interest, as shown below, and run:

Now, we can fit our variogram model:

1. Activate the Estimate ribbon and select Standard | Fit.

2. In the Variogram dialog window, Input File group, browse your project folder and select
the file “'exp_variogram_z1”.
3. Check the box for field of interest, as shown below:

4. Go to Model Fitting tab and select Standard | Fit.

5. In the Parameters group, add Spherical structure, as shown below.
6. Fit the theoretical model to the existing variogram, as illustrated below.
7. Now, we can save our model and proceed to block modeling.

 Grade estimation [Zone 2]

Defining the Input Block Model and Sample Files

1. Activate the Estimate ribbon and select Interpolate.

2. In the Grade Estimation (ESTIMATE) dialog, Files tab, select the Input subtab.
3. In the Geological Model group, click Browse.
4. In the Project Browser dialog, Database Tables pane, Block Models folder, select
‘GEOMODEL’, click OK.
5. In the Sample Data group, click Browse.
6. In the Project Browser dialog, Database Tables pane, All Tables folder, select
‘comp_2m’, click OK.
7. In the Coordinates Fields group, select the X, Y and Z fields [X], [Y], [Z] (defaults).
8. In the Zone Control Fields group, select the Zone field [ZONE].
9. Check that your parameters are as shown below:

Defining the Output Block Model

1. In the Grade Estimation (ESTIMATE) dialog, Files tab, select the Output subtab.
2. In the Grade Model group, define a new model filename 'model_au_z2'.
3. In the Grade Model group, define a new sample output file 'samp_model_au_z2'.
4. In the Parameter Files (Input and Output) group, tick the Use Defaults check box.
5. Check that your parameters are as shown below:
Checking the Variogram Model Parameters

1. In the Grade Estimation (ESTIMATE) dialog, Files tab, click Next

2. In the Grade Estimation (ESTIMATE) dialog, Unfolding tab, click Next
3. In the Grade Estimation (ESTIMATE) dialog, Search Volumes tab, click Next
4. In the Variogram Models tab, Index group, click Import option and choose
‘VMODEL_Z2’
Defining a Set of Search Parameters using ESTIMATE

1. In the Grade Estimation (ESTIMATE) dialog, Variogram Models tab, click Previous
2. In the Search Volumes tab, Index group, click Add.
3. In the search volume list, check that a new search volume 'Search Volume 1' has been
added.
4. Right-click the Search Volume 1 and copy the parameters of variogram model; define the
parameters as shown below:

Defining the Estimation Types

1. In the Grade Estimation (ESTIMATE) dialog, Variogram Models tab, click Next.
2. In the Estimation Types tab, Index group, click Add.
3. In the estimation parameter list, check that a new estimation parameter description '1:
Estima Param 1' has been added.
4. Rename it to ‘Au_OK_Z2’.
5. In the Attributes sub-tab on the right, referring to the table of estimation parameters at the
start of this exercise, define the settings shown below:
6. In the Summary subtab, check that your parameters are as shown below, and Run:

5. Select : the F1 field [AU]

6. In the Parameters tab, define Density as '2.5' and set absent grades to zero; click OK:
7. Select the Command control bar, check that TONGRAD has run to completion and that the
output file contains 1 record, as shown below:

8. Check the output file from project folder ‘Results’:
