NEWS ITEM 0, EXAMPLE
The Government is to announce plans to raise the age of retirement later this morning. This is in line with
similar initiatives proposed in other EU countries. The retirement age for men is expected to be raised to 66,
with the retirement age for women being raised later this year.

NEWS ITEM 1
Heavy rain is still causing problems in much of central Europe. Hundreds of people have abandoned or lost
their homes due to widespread flooding. Areas of Poland and Germany have been affected especially badly.
The heavy rain is forecast to continue for the rest of this week.

NEWS ITEM 2
The former boyfriend of the missing Lancashire woman, Jodie Barker, has been charged in connection with
her disappearance. Barker was first reported missing last May. The relationship between Barker and her
former partner has been described as ‘turbulent’.

NEWS ITEM 3
The Office of National Statistics has warned that we may be heading for a shortage of primary school places
in England and Scotland. The number of primary school-aged students will rise by eight percent over the
next four years. With the Government’s new plans to cut funding, schools may not be able to cope.

NEWS ITEM 4
Hospitals in the north-west are to carry out a survey to measure patients’ satisfaction with their services and
treatments. This follows a recent increase in complaints about the National Health Service in the region.

NEWS ITEM 5
England’s 3–0 win against Germany today takes them through to the next round of the World Cup. The
England captain has given a statement, saying that he is confident that the team will go all the way. England
will play Spain in the quarter-finals next Saturday.

We’re now turning onto the Strand, one of London’s oldest streets. It runs next
to the River Thames, joining up the old boroughs of the City of London and the
City of Westminster. ‘Strand’ means ‘river shore’ or ‘bank’ in Old English.
On the right now, you can see Somerset House. You can see the courtyard there
… the front of the building looks over the Thames. Somerset House was built in
the 18th century and has been home to many British institutions. For over 150
years, all British birth, marriage and death certificates were kept here. Today,
Somerset House is a centre for arts and culture. It’s home to the headquarters of
British Vogue. You can see the fountains in the courtyard … in the winter the
courtyard’s converted into an ice-skating rink.
From our current position, you can just see Waterloo Bridge. Coming up is the
famous Savoy Hotel. It’s one of London’s most luxurious hotels. It first opened
its doors in 1889, and has recently been reopened after a hundred-million-pound
refurbishment.
You can see the Savoy Theatre as well … we’re now basically in London’s West
End, or ‘Theatreland’. On the left, you can see another famous old theatre, the
Adelphi Theatre. London has over forty theatres in the West End, attracting
thirteen million people a year to shows, plays and musicals.
We’re making our way up to Trafalgar Square now, where the tour will end. On
