Gender Equality

What is gender equality? Gender equality is one of the serious issues in

our current modern society, it refers to equality of responsibilities, rights
and opportunities for all gender. Everyone has the right to lead his or her
life according to their wish without any discrimination. When this state is
achieved where all individuals are considered to be equal irrespective of
their caste, gender, color, profession, and status, we call it equality.
Equality can also be defined as the situation where every individual has the
same rights and equal opportunities in political, economics, education and
health aspects.

First of all, every individual of society dreams for equal rights and
access to resources available at their disposal, but there is a lot of
discrimination. This discrimination can be due to cultural differences,
geographical differences, the color of the individual, social status and even
gender. The most prevalent discrimination is gender inequality. Inequality
based on gender is a concern that is prevalent in the entire world. Even in
the 21st century, across globe men and women do not enjoy equal
privileges. Everyone is affected by gender inequality – women, men, trans
and gender diverse people, children and families. It impacts people of all
ages and background.

Secondly, a nation can progress and attain higher development growth

only when both men and women are entitled to equal opportunities.
Women in the society are often cornered and are refrained from getting
equal rights as men to health, education and economic independence in
terms of wages. In Myanmar, women and girls are socially obligated and
expected to be in charge of the household, children, elderly relatives, and
take on other caring responsibilities. The expectation that men are leaders,
combined with the social expectation that women play supportive roles, is
entrenched in daily Myanmar life. We all know how women are being
treated in society due to lack of awareness and inequality. Since ancient
times certain labels and roles have been prescribed for different sexes such
as men are to bring money into the house and women are to do household
chores, to take care of family, etc. We see in many cases that women have
not received a good education or denied their rights. But men also face
gender inequalities when they choose different career than normal.

In gender equal society, women and men chose their profession by

vocation, receive equal pay and develop their careers using their skills.
Such a society treats women and men with equal respect and pays close
attention to their views when making-decisions, adopting laws and
implementing policies. Gender equality prevents violence against women.
Society that value women and men as equal are safer and healthier. Gender
equality is a human right. Everyone will benefits from gender equality.
Both men and women can be free of the pressure of society and fulfill their
potential regardless of the gender roles imposed by stereotypes.

Additionally, there are many ways of specific societal benefits of

gender equality. For instance, when all genders receive equal job
opportunities, society benefits. A diverse workplace is a more productive
workplace, and this diversity includes gender diversity. This success in the
workplace translates into the economy, as well. Gender equality in
education benefits every child within the school system. Girls who receive
an education have a higher likelihood to be healthier and more productive,
earning higher incomes and building better futures for their families. This
is turn contributes to stronger economy that benefits all genders and leads
to better health within a community. Moreover, gender equality has a
negative impact on many health outcome, including in regard to family
planning, maternal and child health, nutrition, pandemic disease and more.

In conclusion, there is definite need to strengthen our legal and

regulatory framework to fight gender inequality. There are many ways to
promote gender equality in daily life, from splitting up household chores
equally to fighting stereotypes. There are also many groups and nonprofits
promoting equity in their communities across the nation. So, we hope that
the whole world will recognize the efforts of all gender in our modern
society equally soon.
