ESD Projects I

The document outlines the steps to design an energy system for transporting gasoline through pipes. It specifies the pipe and fluid properties and provides instructions to determine pipe sizes, pump characteristics, and energy consumption including solving equations iteratively and selecting pump and motor specifications.

ENERGY SYSTEMS DESIGN PROJECT I

 All pipes: new cast iron / Schedule 40.

 Liquid: gasoline at standard temperature.
 Liquid velocity: from 1.7 to 3.5 m/s.
 Pump operation limits: Flow rate up to 70 l/s and Head up to 35 m
 System operation: 24 h daily.
 Catalogue: pumps and motors characteristics

Report:
1. Formulate the equations for the flow rates determination
2. Specify the pump(s) reference
3. Determine the pump(s) relation: Head-Flow rate
4. Select a preliminary pipes size according to the pipes standards
5. Formulate the numerical method and solve for the flow rate in pipes
6. Analyse results, readjust the pipes size if necessary and update results. This step will be repeated
until achievement of a satisfactory sizing and solution.
7. Indicate the final flow rate and the direction in each branch on the system graph
8. Depict the convergence history of the iterative procedure
9. Specify the operating flow rate and the head for the pump(s): flow rate, head, efficiency, power
and NPSHr. Indicate the operating point on the pump(s) chart
10. Specify the electric motor standard rating and its efficiency.
11. Summarize results in tables as in appendix.
12. Comment and conclude briefly about the results
